so after years of both kinds.........

They dont like either. Thats a fact. If I had to chose which one they "tolerate" more, I'd say white flash. The red glow is the worse there is. Unfortunately, I still have 2 of them. Black flash is the only way to go.

Again, only use true black flash or red flash if you don't care about the quality of your pictures. I get the argument against white flash, but I want my cameras to do what cameras are meant to do...take pictures. ;)

i guess i should add that i realize black is tolerated more, but, of the two, which cameras do mature bucks tolerate more- white or red flash?? is there any data around to back it up?

I'm not doing any scientific research on the subject matter, but just based on my observations, there is little difference in the degree to which a mature buck will avoid red flash over white flash.

The red flash lasts for a much longer duration than white. White may seem a more natural phenomena to a deer, as they are frequently experiencing natural lightning. But white has a couple huge advantages over red:
1) Color pics
2) Clearer sharper images on moving deer.

Among the cams I have and have had, the white flash models also tend to reach out farther into the darkness in actually getting those nighttime pics. So my vote is for white flash over red.

I agree.
However, for the purpose of monitoring mature bucks related to hunting them, I believe the invisible black flash is the best option. If I were more into selling my pics to magazines, white flash on home-brews would be all I did.

Yes, I have data. Older bucks tolerate neither.

Since both are equally bad, I agree with Wes' arguments for white-flash, i.e. much better pictures.
