My dad got permission for us to hunt some property and he had looked at it yesterday. The fella that lives there had been seeing two gobblers.
So we were there at daylight and immediately heard a gobble and it wasn't far. We got set up on the low side of a fence line. We're in the woods with a field to our right and rising upward that direction. The gobbler is straight out sounded like the corner of the field. He gobbled sporadically and not really to me but enough to tell when he was on the ground.
With his being over another rise it was hard to tell how much he was moving. I had moved behind sad and was videoing. He is slightly left and below me.
After a bit I heard dad choke a cough. Then another. He was shaking his head no which I interpreted as I'm fixing to have a coughing fit. So I started cutting and cackling as dad hacked away. It was a 30 second or more ordeal. During this time the gobbler lost his mind gobbling every breath and he was closer.
Shortly I heard a putt. He was in the field and had sneaked a peek and saw dad move slightly. He continued putting and I finally saw his head as he was walking circles in the field. I started clucking back at him. I really thought this was a hen because the gobbles had sounded further left.
I was behind a leafy bush so I was able to stand. I had kept calling and he had kept putting and moved off just a little. Finally he turned and came back and I saw red head then saw the beard. With his head up I dropped him. I really expected to see another gobbler when I went to get him but it appears that he was alone.
#3 in the books.
He was light but had 7/8" spurs and bushy 10" beard.
