After the youth hunt this year, my son decided he wanted to be more patient and hold out for a buck.

This past Sunday we went to the lease and he missed a buck that was broadside at 100yds. The buck was chasing a doe and I stopped him and my son got on the gun and shot in less than 10 seconds. It all happened so fast that he made a bad shot. Luckily he didn't get too upset and wanted to go back ASAP to try again.

Yesterday we got in the blind right at legal shooting time and one minute after sunrise I decided my feet were cold and I had my boots off putting hand warmers in them.

I looked up and a buck had stepped out and was standing broadside at 75yds. He took his time, took an extra breath and made a perfect shot. The deer ran out of sight but I knew he was hit.

We waited a little while and went over to where the deer was standing and I immediately saw the deer laying in the field about 40yds away but didn't tell him. We looked for hair for a minute or two and couldn't find any. He started towards the deer looking for blood but we didn't find any. Eventually he looked up and saw the deer and took off running.

Smiles, hugs and high fives followed.

He killed the deer with a rifle that was given to me by my grandfather. It's a beautiful model 700 chambered in 22-250. My son doesn't know it yet but that gun belongs to him now along with enough handloads from my grandfather to last him a lifetime.
