Yesterday Benjamin and I went to try and roost a bird. Couldn't get them to do anything and as we're leaving I heard what sounded like wings hitting the trees so I stop and start glassing and what do I see but a big ole red head and 2 other birds that I couldn't tell what they were. I really wanted to set a blind up but it was still too light and they'd see me so we came on home. My daughter was at a sleepover so when my wife got home about 8:30 I headed back over and put it up and staked it down good because the dang cows wouldn't leave it alone. Got up this morning at 5:00 and am getting everything settled in the blind when the first bird gobbled at 5:50. Another sounded off at 6:00 and then 6:10. After that they got fired up and there were 2 for sure and I thought 3. I could see the same 3 birds from yesterday evening in the trees and started lightly calling on the slate call. It got a little bit lighter so I did a fly down cackle and flapped the wing I carry. They gobbled and then one by one I saw them coming down. One hen landed 40 yards from us but the gobblers were on the other side of a pond (the other spot I went first but changed my mind). Well wouldn't you know the cows had messed with the 1 hen decoy I put out and her head was straight down and rear end up. The hens came on in and finally I saw the 2 gobblers strutting and gobbling around the corner. I kept thinking please get to 25 yards. Finally after what seemed like an eternity and a few more yelps they got to 30 yards. I had the gun up on the shooting sticks and Benjamin settled in. When he said he was ready I flipped the safety off and he waited until I told him he was clear to fire. About 3 seconds later BOOOOOM and down went the bird at 30 yards. The other gobbler started kicking his butt so I jumped out of the blind and ran them off. It's his first bird and he said it was more fun than deer hunting. Yep he's my boy. Also he just turned 8 on the 14th of this month and that Mossberg 500 Bantam was his present. It was either that or some video game thingy. This morning he said it sure was more fun having that gun. :D

Way to go! Great bird and a great story. I got lucky this week, the cows on our lease were in a different pasture.
