Has anyone been on a hunt in S Africa. I got drawn for a hunt with Dries Visser Safaris all I have to furnish is air fare and the cost of whatever I shoot minus what credit they gave me. I was looking for info on the cost of shipping heads back to states would probably just have euro mounts and hides tanned. Any info is appreciated thanks

I went last July and loved. I'm in the planning stages for next year. The shipping and taxidermy can equal or exceed the cost of the hunt, depending on what you have done.

I went back in 2011. The inspection, prep, shipping, and insurance is an additional expense. Seems like it was $1200ish for my horns/hides back then. I sent all my stuff to Wilderness Taxidermy in Franklin, NC. You can have the taxidermy done over there and have it all shipped back. Not sure if there is an advantage either way.

The shipping cost varies dependent on what you have done. If you just do European mounts and hides I would budget $2000 for shipping costs. Double that for shoulder mounts. Also taxidermy is great but I tell a lot of guys forget the taxidermy and just do large framed pictures with a story matted in with the picture. A whole lot cheaper and more meaningful than a dusty old head no one knows the story about after we're gone.

We went in 2022 off a hunt we won at a RMEF fundraiser. Probably the best vacation we have ever had. Ended up hunting South Africa then spending a few hours out in London on the way home.

Shipping heads home can get a little expensive, especially with hides. You will need to get with a broker. We used Coppersmith in Atlanta who gathered our stuff and filled out all the required documents. Actually drove down there to get it since it was rainy and I have the patience of a toddler.

I think it was around $1500 for our stuff getting it back.
