NASHVILLE, Tenn.--A Tennessee bill which would legalize sports betting seeks to clear another hurdle in the Government Operations Committee.

Congressman Rick Staples (D-Knoxville) filled HB0001, otherwise known as the "Tennessee Sports Gaming Act."

Under the proposed legislation, a Tennessee gaming commission would be established and work with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) to make sure establishments are regulated.

It would be up to local communities to then petition their local government with at least 10% of voters calling for a vote on legalizing betting in their area. Sports betting would then be put on the next election ballot for that community to vote on if they want to see sports betting in their town.

It passed the Senate this morning.

The final action on TN sports betting will rest with Gov. Bill Lee, and there's no indication he plans to veto the bill.
