I usually hunt with my boss a few times each year. He loves it, but he's relatively new to turkey hunting. This year he's been focusing his attention on getting his 13 year son a turkey. I knew where one was that I hadn't really hunted so we went Friday. Rainy, cold, windy - but he flew down 80 yards in front if us and worked his way to 40. I told him to shoot, but he only aimed for several seconds then raised his head. Once the turkey walked off I asked him what happened. His hands were cold, his gloves were wet, and he was nervous. Couldn't get the safety off.

Wen't back this morning. Flew down at 100 yards, worked his way to 60, gobbled 100+ times, strutted for an hour, bred a hen - awesome hunt. But no shot. At one point he went into the woods and I called him to 45. I could see him well but the kid couldn't.

Going back tomorow. I think I have the plan dialed in. At least I hope so. If he slips us again I may have to take up arms against him myself and find another turkey for the kid to hunt.

Gl, anyone who can get a kid a Turkey has done something. A million things can go wrong, and everything has to just right for them to get one.

Ditto! Good luck SS, hope the third time is a charm. The kid should be about hooked from the close up intense hunts he has experienced thus far. Keep us posted.

He is flying down into a small cove with 4 hens. The cove is roughly 150 yards across. Every day he has strutted and hung out in the cove and then moved into the main field along the north tree line. Yesterday after he left the field I set up a turkey chair on the north edge near the landing spot. This morning he flew down and landed at 60 yards. The hens were about 50. But two other hens were the first ones in the field and they flew out into the main field. When mine hit the ground they looked up and walked straight to the other hens. Then he strutted away. From a size standpoint, the turkey is underwhelming. He's a 2 year old (I've looked at his spurs at close range with binoculars quite a lot), and he has pretty significant beard rot. But I can't think of a turkey in recent memory that I wanted to see die more. If he keeps roosting and flying down in the same spot he will die soon.

I do think the kid is hooked. According to his dad he usually plays fortnight (video game) every night pretty late. He's been turning it off and going to bed early to get up and chase this gobbler. We asked him today if he wanted to try another place. Answer: "Not until we kill this one." I told him if we get him, one day when he has killed a hundred, he will always remember this one well.

Good Luck. It gets personal with them.

I am in the same boat. I finally found a bird and the joker is on private land most of the time. I have called him to within 35 yds of the property line twice and he will not come into Public. The Jakes and Hens will, but not him. On Monday I took off and he was roosted on public and I actually called him across a river and he busted me moving my gun to get on him.

Great hunts though he gobbles a lot, but unfortunately I'm starting to see others show up to this area.... I guess they hear him.

Good luck! No matter if he kills or not he has already succeeded. Sounds like he is experiencing what it's all about.
