Me and my best hunting buddy went this morning to a property right at first light, heard like 2 birds way off the permitted land so made the decision to try spot number 2. It was still before flydown, because when I parked the truck and opened the door I was greeted by a gobble about 150 yards away, off our property again. I knew a place a couple hundred yards down where the woods were more open so we took off. We sat down and the show started, lots of gobbling, hens cackling. I was calling, my buddy was behind the 20 gauge, loaded to the brim with #9 TSS !! I saw his finger pointing towards the ruckus, a fight with wings loudly flapping and loud clucking from above, he had his eyes on the prize! I didn`t move and heard leaves behind me, but no gun movement. After 5 minutes or so I whispered if he could still see the gobbler, he pointed right, then another turkey was gobbling behind us, maybe 100 yds. He looked right and I see the gun start easing up, safety go click, and boom! The bird behind us gobbled, I handed him the box call and said "call me one up" he sounded great on the call, and the flapping downed bird was helping our cause too, but this second bird may have been evicted earlier because he was very cautious. Still gobbling very good but very patient, holding his ground. He was the other side of a pretty thick hedgerow, and his gobbling was moving left, the downed bird did more flopping and he gobbled, my buddy cutt and yelped while the flopping was going on, and the next gobble was on our side of the thick hedge. Way left. He held his ground for about 10 more minutes till he decided to look for his hen, and as he got into range at 40 yards I let loose. Great day to be out in the good Lords turkey woods!! The leaves behind me that I heard, my buddy said was the first longbeard that walked 5 yards behind me, ended up was the one gobbling on the other side of hedge!!
