It was raining this morning so i traveled light (no vest and only one call). The birds were gobbling on the roost so I got close before I set up. I had gobblers to my left and right and hens on both sides too. The bird to my right was the closest and I heard him fly down. He didn't make a sound for probably 30 minutes. Then all of a sudden he gobbled and was closer. I turned my lounger to the other side of the tree and let out some soft yelps on my 10 year old Wal-Mart slate and got ready. That dang bird moved up the hill on me and I watched him cross into a field at about 80 yards. Then he started down the fence towards me. Now the problem was that I was 50 yards from the fence. But I knew my gun would kill at 50, so I made up my mind to shoot if he got into my opening. Well, he did, and I missed. He ran back up the fence, then turned around and came RUNNING back down the fence line. My inner duck hunter came out and I tried him twice more as he ran by, but it didnt work. So there i was, out of shells bc I didnt use my vest and couldnt try to make a move on the other gobblers. I swear i think if I had used a decoy, that bird would not have crossed the fence and would've been better in range. Oh well, I messed up. That's how you learn. Maybe now I've got the dumb decisions out of my system and I'll be able to pull it off a Yuchi this weekend
