I'm fairly new to turkey hunting. Why as soon as you shoot a turkey do you have to run up to it. see this all the time on tv. Last night guy shot one and I think the recoil on the shot still had him moving back and he was already half way up ready to run.

Many times when a turkey is shot...its not dead.

They flop..flap..kick and carry on.

Some folks stand on their necks or ring their necks(like a chicken). But watch those spurs.

Ive had two over the years...that were shot...carried out of the woods (dead I thought)...rode in the back of the truck to the check station...then flew out...had to be chased down.

They can fool you and they will get away...so when in doubt go after them. Good luck!

You don't have to. I guess they do it either out of excitement or to keep or to maybe get up finish it off if necessary before it flies or runs off.

HA! Great mental picture! Thanks!

If there is multiple longbeards around I do not run after a bird until they've cleared out (of course, unless it isn't hit hard and is going to get away). More times than not, other birds in the area do not spook away completely and many times they will pounce on a flopping bird. By tearing after a bird you educate the others that a predator is occupying the area.

they will get up and get air under them if it is not a lethal shot, it doesnt take much to make a turkey flop for a few seconds and then get up like nothing happened, its just a precaution to make sure of a quick clean kill

also to add if they are flopping long it can do a lot of damage to the feathers and what not. Some really like to hold onto the tail or wings. I have seen some get up and run after being shot and flopping for a few mins and TRUST ME they are fast on the ground when running!

Because it only takes one time for a bird to get up and run off
for you to learn your lesson! I remember watching two guys hi five and pump their fist only to let a big old LB get up and get away. I always run to him and either hold him down with my foot or ring his neck

agreed, seen the same thing except i was one of them high 5ing (although was not the one that shot) and the bird got up mid 5 and started running. ended up chasing him for almost a mile before my buddy caught him by the tail feathers and proceeded to beat it with a rock because he was out of shells. Needless to say prior to finally dying that bird BEAT THE (####) out of my buddy with his spurs.

(on a happier note it is still the funniest thing i have ever seen while hunting hahah)

I do it to make sure they don't flop and roll down a 3000 foot mountain, where I have to climb down and then back up. Also, I have seen birds which were stoned literally get their feet under them and take off running. I am on them quick, and I usually just put my weight on their back to keep them from flopping all over the woods.
