Not a big turkey hunter so maybe there is a valid reason for this but why do the guys on the hunting shows after the shot jump up and run to the turkey flopping on the ground.

cause they aint dead till they are no longer flopping! I've seem some get up and take off, also I've seem them destroy their beard and fan flopping around on the ground.

I first thought it was because they thought the turkey might fly off but the more I saw this they never had their gun ready to shoot. But it does make sense about messing up the beards and fans. thanks

Most who have turkey hunted for a few years will have tales of birds "resurrecting" :D !

maybe not the best idea to take off running full sprint with a loaded shotgun, and usually you have time to get to a bird and break its neck before a potentially stunned turkey could get back up

I've got a video somewhere of me chasing a turkey thru a field when I was 13. Rite before I got to him he got his feet under him and took off I chased him zig zagging for a good 200 yds. Then I jumped on him and when I landed on him, he flopped and I must of had a hand or foot on his beard cause when I picked it up it didn't have a beard. Went back and looked and sure enough there it was just laying there. Made great video though. The camera man couldn't hold it together though. He laughed for hours.

After you tackle one, beat it to death with a stick or strangle it. Trust me it will make sense.

So, you're saying those high dollar 3.5 magnum shells that'll put 200 pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards don't kill 'em graveyard dead. Do the companies advertising on those shows know that... :stir:

A buddy of mine's brother chased one down through the woods and form tackled it and cut its throat after it decided it wasn't dead yet, turkey left him with some nasty cuts too

I recall a couple I had to kill twice as they were dead only until I tried to pick them up (and for one in particular got the scar from his spur on my palm to prove it). One swift kick ripped through my glove and skin like it was nothing. Had to stand on his neck for a good bit and that joker flopped so much I thought he'd never croak. He cleared out leaves for a 5ft radius and there was enough feathers floating about to make a pillow!

Dang turkey wore me out.

Exactly, I'll never forget one I shot years ago. Shot him with #7 hevi shot, bang flop at about 28 yards. Right about the time I got to him he jumped up and started running in about a 10 ft. circle. His head was dropped over to the side like he was drunk and he was making a crazy grunting noise. I thought to myself, I ain't wasting another $5 shell and noticed a 4ft. dead limb laying on the ground next to me. I picked it up, and when he made his next loop by me I caught him with my best baseball swing I could muster right in the head. Lets just say that sure hit a little harder than that load of 7's, lol!

I just remembered the first longbeard I killed. He was flopping like most birds when shot, but when I got him back to where my gun was, I noticed he was still breathing/looking with his eyes. Ground was soft and stomping did not work. Not knowing what else to do, I ran my pocket knife into his head. Kind of gruesome but I can not stand to watch one suffer. Haven't used a knife since. If it's flopping a lot, I usually grab by the head and swing it up and down till something pops.

Yep. I've tackled a couple. Now I approach them like i'm waiting for a quail to flush.
