he's a good defensive coach, but he did give up
30 to kentucky
42 to alabama
30 to LSU
42 to mizzou
and he won't have near the talent at auburn, IMO.

Yes, but he was head coach and not the DC. I guess the question is who really ran the Gator defense the past two years - Muschamp or the guy with DC title, D.J. Durkin?

^^^When UF was giving up big points to teams you forgot bama set a record in yards against them also I said the same thing. I didn't see much defense:/ besides against UT who sucked in that game maybe against a bad SC team lol that florida lost:/ or a over rated FSU team that let everyone they played stay close:/ and Georgia game they only gave up 20 but thats because UF held the ball and ran it over and over and over lol
Besides them 3 or 4 games didnt think there defense was all that amazing.

Malzahns offense is too fast. Keeps the defense on the field too long. Muschamp will he mad. Malzahn will be mad. It wont last.

The number of offense oriented head coaches that have excellent defenses is microscopic. Malzahn will want more offensive guys while Muschamp will want more defensive guys. Obviously, the HC wins those battles and Muschamp won't hang around trying to work magic with a handful of good defensive players.

Also Auburn has had a couple of good, maybe even great Defensive coordinators in the past under Malzahn. Before Auburn Ellis Johnson had the #3 defense in the nation at USC(e). Ted Roof had a top 20 defense at Penn State and ain't doing bad at Georgia Tech.
Auburn's problem is that its offense forces its defense to stay on the field too long. Muschamp will have his work cut out for him just like Johnson and Roof Did.

I'm a fan of one of Auburn's biggest rivals; not only on the field, but also in recruiting. I think that this was a great hire for Auburn, for both coaching and recruiting. Muschamp's players loved him, despite his crazy sideline blowups, scowls, and temper tantrums. It will be a very animated sideline down on the plains, as Malzahn can get pretty excited too, just in a different way.
Only time will tell how this relationship works out, but a fast moving offense can be very tough on a defense. On the other hand, Auburn has done a very good job of recruiting some topflight defensive talent from GA and FL, so they will have the bodies to plug into the system. I foresee a markedly improved D for Auburn next season, but I really thought that Ellis Johnson was gonna be a good coach for them, as well.

I agree. The kicker is that he doesn't need a top defense, just one that keeps the opponent from scoring as much as Auburn's offense

BTW, good for Muschamp. Getting $1.6M/yr as a DC, ON TOP of the $6M that Florida still has to pay him is pretty sweet.

I hope he does well and it will not help FL in recruiting this season since two (Cowart & Ivey) FL leans (5 stars) have Auburn as their second choice. I hope since they are from FL that it's the school and not the old head coach.
