I decided I'm going to try to fill my remaining 2 tags on public land turkeys. I got off around noon today and was fixing to head out, I got a phone call from my buddy that hunts with me all the time wanting to go hunting. We met on a WMA I used to hunt a lot and kill a lot of birds, I don't hunt there much anymore due to the amount of pressure it gets and I just don't enjoy fighting all the people. We hunted hard and I finally got a bird to answer me, of course he was across the river deep into private land. I figured what the heck, I'll fool with him since nothing else was going on. He answered everything I threw his way, he came all the way to the river bank and walked back and forth gobbling like crazy. This went on for 10 or 15 mins and I didn't think there was anyway he was crossing the river and flying up on top of the bluff where we were but crazier things have happened. We decided to give him the silent treatment and he would either lose interest or maybe come to our side. We sat there for an hour and never made a peep, he gobbled several times but I never said a word. We were just about to give up on him after he went silent for awhile and then I heard him fly the river. He landed out the ridge from us 60 or 70 yards. I gave him a few soft calls and he hammered, he stayed in one spot and strutted and spit and drummed for almost an hour. I gave him a few soft clucks and purrs, and a little scratching in the leaves and he had all he could stand and he came on in. He got to 25-30 yards and I told my buddy to kill him, he shot and he flew right back across the river where he came from, I gave my buddy hell all the way back to the truck[emoji2] I'll wait a couple of days and go back and try him again, huge beard on that dude. Maybe next time he'll be on my side, I doubt flies the river for a hen on that bluff anytime soon!

You got all the good out if that bird, PLUS you get to hunt him again!

My first bird I ever liked came from a bachelor group that flew across a river to come to my squawking.

It happens to all of us eventually, but a great story and unfolding of events nonetheless. That turkey hunt unfolded like they are supposed to. Good luck with him next time and thanks for sharing.

Also called in a hard gobbling jake after that, he had a full gobble and a full fan, I was just fixing to give it to him and then I saw his 3" stubby beard, he did it right though.

Beard rot?

No, he got within 10 yards and I could see his spurs, they were 1/2" or less.

10-4, I'd call him an old bird with full fan, or full wing patch. Beard and spurs not a deciding factor in my opinion.

Oh man, I bet that was painful.

On the plus side, 20 years from now you can still razz him about how hard you worked for that one bird and then he choked.

The other one would have died. If he plays like a gobbler AND looks like a gobbler, he can die like a gobbler.

That's a tough one but a great hunt none the less. I absolutely get no better satisfaction out of getting a turkey to do something that he doesn't want to do (Like pitching across a river). I think we will all remember the great hunts when we get older regardless of the outcome. I was trying to recount the turkeys I've killed the other day. It seems like I could remember those great hunts that I didn't kill better than those I crawled one ambushed one going to roost.

For sure. I remember the battles I lost, and the battles I barely won, way more vividly than the textbook hunts.
