Ok fellas, I would like to tell you my setup and you tell me your opinions. I would love to pay 600 dollars for a new hoyt buffalo but cant justify it. Here we go................Wing Archery Nighthawk, 35lb, gold tip 35-50 expedition hunter full length, (3) 4" feathers, 100 grain magnus 2 blade. Can this bow kill a deer at 20 yards?

I would think so if you hit it in the vitals. You may have to trail it for a while keeping it bleeding out some and letting it lay down.
Don't keep pushing it. I would wait at least 2-3 hours before
looking for it. Be sure those blades are razor sharp and don't miss.

ditto what J said.

if i may add. let the deer get closer if you can.
how's your arrow flight? carbons are stiffer, sometimes you need a heavier head to straighten out the flight. you might try a 125gr head.
increase or decrease your brace height can help tune the arrow flight and quieten the bow at the same time. dont change the number of twists by more than one or 2 twists/untwists at a time. measure your brace before you start for reference and again afterwards for reference to look back on when you replace your string or change for string stretch.

Ya know Eddie, I've never twisted my string before. Arrow flight is pretty good have paper tested it yet like I wanna. I hit well with it. I really want a new recurve, but my pappaw bought this bow foe me when I was 10 for $15 at a church yard sale. It killed a robin a rabbit and a cat. LOL.
Tell me more about the twisting. I assume you shorten the string by twisting.

you shorten or lengthen the string by twisting. this increases(by shortening the string) or decreases the brace height. this is done to find the 'sweet spot'. the sweet spot is where there is less bow noise and good arrow flight. sometimes it takes several shooting sessions to find it. your release of the string comes into play here also. on a new string I usually try to find that spot before I put my silencers on the string. I have seen guys that had dead quiet bows without silencers. they found the sweet spot.
If you like your setting now, measure your brace and write it down. 2 reasons. if you get a new string, you will know where to get back to your brace height. if you try twisting and dont like the results, you can get back to your brace. plus you have to break in new strings, they will stretch and decrease your brace. you twist tighter to get it back.

OK eddie, I have experimented today. My bow with an untwistedstring has abrace height of 6 7/8. I am currently up to 7 1/2 and stopped. It is quiter but am I losing speed by doing this?

you lose the distance of your power stroke. so in a since you can lose speed but it shouldnt be more than a couple of fps.
BUT a arrow with poor flight (side kicks, wobble, etc) will lose more speed down range than one flying like a dart. only real way to tell is to chrono it. that wobbly arrow is going to lose energy in flight faster than the good flying one. get your flight first, then silence the bow.
I was taught to worry about having the bow quiet and hit where I'm aiming than to have a fast noisy bow that the deer can hear and jump the string.

OK sounds like a visit to my local proshop in Halls. I have seen some wobblers. I am hitting all over my target. Cant keep all 7 arrows in the kill zone. I did shoot one of my two blade magnus heads dead center perfect. I have it set in my mind that anything over 20 yards is a no go.

keep in mind your release of the string has a lot to play into it also.
I dont know your aiming method but here is how I did it when I got started.
5 steps - kept shooting at that distance until I was very consistant. then I take one more step, repeat.

then a couple of years later someone told me to get some blunts, go out and have fun. I learned more out having fun with the blunts than anything else.

OK well define blunts for me. Are ya talkin about flu flus? Now IM gonna throw somehing at you that may be difficult. What recurve would you recommend? I wanna go with either the hoyt or bear. Any experience with either?

blunts: show ya better than explain it.

as far as recommending a bow, it is a lot like picking out a wife, only easier and more fun. you will know real quick if you like it or not.
I have shot a couple of Hoyts, a bunch of old Bears, not many new Bears and probably a couple of dozen other makes and models over the past 10-12 yrs. I suggest you get your hands on several models and brands to try them before you buy one. what is an Angel in my hands may be a Devilette in yours.

I'm sending you a PM with some info about one.

I've bought two bows used off of Tradgang.com's classifieds and they were both in great shape and smokin' deals. The two favorite bows I've shot have been RER and my 3 Rivers Dalaa that I bought used for about half what a new one costs. I've got 4 recurves now so the last thing I need is another one, but I'm still tempted every time I see a used RER bow come up for sale.
I like those older Sky Archery bows too...kinda heavy to tote around for a recurve, but they're good shooters.

Ok well I have gathered that I need to go to Jerrys bait shop in Rcokwood to try out hoyt dorado, gamemaster, and buffalo, then over to Maryville for a Bear dealer. Then who knows. I just feel I might be able to shoot better with better equipment, I am going to shoot my buddies buffalo soon and we will see if better equipment makes me a better archer.

better equipment will help but remember, it has to 'fit' YOU. dont start off with too much poundage.

What poundage do you recommend? Im 6'1" 340, 28 yrs old, and played football since I was 5 and two years in college. Im a big boy, I pulled an 80 lb high country sniper for years. Recurves are generally quick shots. What works for you guys?

keep in mind there is no let off in trad bows. and not every one quick shoots a trad bow. some actually draw, anchor and aim for several seconds. it is mostly recommended to start 45# and work your way up. anything in the 45-55# range will handle anything in TN. this is one reason I suggested to try different bows to find out what is comfortable.

I'm not saying this will happen to you but I have seen a compound shooter drawing 75# with his bow having problems getting to anchor with a 55# longbow because it didnt break over half way thru the draw. he couldnt draw his compound without pointing to the sky.
dont over bow yourself. that is the first mistake new trad shooters usually make.

Agree! I think 45 to 55 is plenty and all I will need. Well friday Im heading to Rockwood. I think drawing and shooting several different bows is the only way I will know what I like.

Anyone ever shot a FUSE recurve? I shot an intrepid and I liked it a lot.

I had to Bing it. judging from the pics, the Intrepid looks to be the only one with a raduised shelf. that will come into play if you plan to shoot off the shelf.
also, in an earlier post by you, you are a big feller. did you try on of the 62" or 66" bows? taller and longer draw folks tend to shooter longer bows better. this doesnt mean a 60" bow will work for you, it is just the case in normal situations.

pretty looking bow from the pics, how does it feel to you? there are some good production model bows out there. just have to find one that 'fits'. what kind of price range are they?

I shot the 62" and with my anchor point(forefinger corner of lip) it was great. I only have a 71" wingspan. It was fast and smooth @ 45#. Its kinda like the reflex of recurves, its made by HOYT. 279 out the door. I am really considering it.
