Took 2 Rio's on Mauna Loa outside of Kona. Lots of birds and A LOT of hens, which made it really challenging. Plus, I am fat and out of shape and running around at 7000 ft about killed me. It was an awesome trip, except I don't like using someone else's shotgun. A couple of gobblers got lucky because of that.

Fantastic! I bet I could sell my wife on a turkey hunting trip to Hawaii!

The outfitter said that over 75% of his hunting clients are guys whose wives have wanted to go to Hawaii for years. The guys manage to secure a little "guy time" to hunt for a day or two while the wife goes shopping or does some other activity. On rare occasions, the wife is a hunter and goes on the hunting trip.

Nice. Why didn't you take your shotgun?

Hawaii is one of the most liberal states in the nation and is run by liberal Democrats. As a result, Hawaii has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. If you bring in a firearm you have to register it within 72 hrs at the police department in Honolulu. The registration process can take many hrs of waiting. They make it so painful that it's just not worth it. The only way I would ever bring a pistol, rifle or shotgun to Hawaii is if I was 100% certain I would be in and out in less than 72 hrs so that I wouldn't have to register it. Muzzleloaders are exempt from the registration requirement. I did bring my muzzleloader one time for an axis deer hunt, but the issue is that you can't bring powder with you on the plane and loose powder or pellets are very hard to find in Hawaii. So, unless your outfitter has powder or pellets then you are wasting your time bringing a muzzleloader.

What do they charge for the turkey hunt if you dont mind telling? I tried looking it up but they want all this contact info just to give a price. Didnt want to give all that out yet seeing how it will be 4 more yrs before I can go.

Wow...I never even thought twice about taking my long-guns to another state. Maybe I should be more careful.
