if the tail fan has dried stiff enough to hold its shape and the little flesh left at the base is stiff, would you go ahead and mount it or let it sit longer? I figure I will just scrape off all the excess salt when I mount it and then put a couple screws in to hold it in place on the plaque. Going out now to pick up some wood plaques and screws to make my own mount. I really can't wait to get this thing on the wall.

Really important to get all that meat out. Bugs will find it and funky odors seem to pop up if you don't. I got a jake fan that I won't bring in the house because of that. lol

I trimmed off almost all of the meat when I cut it off the bird. Salted it up good and left it to dry. It really sped up the drying one afternoon when I put it right out in the hot sun. A few tiny black ants showed up to clean up some of the fat - I consider that a plus because I dont want excess fat on my finished mount. The sun just came out again so maybe I'll put it out one more time for a few hrs.

well since it's already salted and almost completely dry I guess it's too late for borax unless I got it wet again and put borax on to let it soak in, but I dont see a point in doing that. I'll just scrape off excess salt and make the mount and hope it lasts me a good while. After all I have a couple of squirrel pelts that were only salted and they're fine, no odors.

I thought of borax. Is the main benefit of borax keeping the odor down?

Yea, it helps to neutrilize the odor, and dries it up just like salt. I've done it both ways, and the ones that I done with borax just seemed cleaner at the end.

Give it a shot on your next bird and see what ya think ;)
