Anyone see the targeting call against Iowa St late in the second quarter?

By the call it looks like linemen on both sides are guilty of targeting on almost every play.

I didn't see it, but can only imagine.

I see the purpose of the rule, but it is so hard to enforce with the speed of the game. And the penalty is too severe imo. Give them a 15 yrd penalty, and MAYBE make them sit the remainder of that series, then roll on. If a player gets a second one, then toss them.

There have been plays where guys will actually back off on making a tackle for fear of getting a targeting call, which results in not making a tackle and leading to scores, which could cost a team the game.

I saw both targeting calls and they were for real; especially the first one. I agree the penalty is pretty severe but the desired result is to stop it completely. I'd opt for being sidelined and having to sit out for a quarter.

I saw both, I agree with the first one but I'm not sure with the second one.

I think the penalty is to harsh. When things are moving very fast and you have a qb that's getting low and you are coming in to hit him, things can get misaligned very easily and an inadvertant targeting will happen. The second one wasn't on purpose, the qb was twisting and going down as he was coming in. The same can be said for the first one too, but it was a violent hit.

I know the rule is needed for safety, but makes it hard when the runner can lower his head and lead with his helmets. I agree with not being kicked out of the game unless called a second time.
