I was wondering about how FPS and KE played into things.

Recently broke out my Bear TD Hunter and had some new arrows cut for it. Playing around with a 130gr Magnus head and a 34 gr glue in insert give me a total arrow weight of 550grs. Shot the bow through the chrony today and came up with a avg speed of 165fps. Using the KE calculator I came up with 33.26 ft-lbs of energy.

It doesn't seem like I'm getting much penetration on my block and Mckenzie deer target. What kind of speed and KE do I need to be looking at for hunting whitetails?

the block and deer target are designed to stop you arrow. the material in the targets and the live animal are 2 different things.

Hogbear's info is good.

I am shooting about 10 gr per #. get good arrow weight, good flight, concentrate on shot placement and the rest is meat and gravy at the table.

Your setup will work just fine on whitetails and even larger game, provided your arrow flight is good and your broadheads are properly sharpened. I've put arrows clean through deer using much less arrow weight, but of course traveling a bit faster. Arrow weight, speed, kenetic energy and draw weight are a few highly debated topics in the trad archery world and will probably continue to be for a long, long time. In 12 years of shooting and hunting with a recurve and various longbows, I've come to worry more about arrow flight, broadhead sharpness, bow noise and shot placement far more so than overall arrow weight and kenetic energy. As I hinted to earlier, I've put arrows through deer using arrow weights ranging from 415-620 gr; out of draw weights ranging from 44#-65# and arrow speeds from 160 to above 200 fps.
