i have been reading about traditional bow hunting for a while. i think i am now ready to say this is my next step in deer hunting.but i have no clue "except what i have read" about the sport. i was talikng to a guy the other day said he made his own bow from hickory . thought that sounded pretty neat. so i guess i am asking where do i start ??? my compound is 60lb 30 inch draw but i am more like 30.5 to 31 .. thanks

I can't speak for everyone, but I got started because it's what my dad always shot. I ended up taking his over last season until it broke on me, but it was enough to get me figuring out my own form and shooting good groups. I happened to find a bowyer (sp?) close to me that allowed me to shoot a few of his bows (both recurve and long bow) from varying poundages. I made my selection from there.

The other obvious way is to buy one off of craigslist or from a pawn shop for cheap - that way you can see if you dig it or not.

first dont pick a bow based on your compound specs. completely different ball game. trad bows have no let off. most guys dont draw as far with a trad bow as they do with a compound. most will shoot less poundage.
i first suggest that you find someone local that shoots trad and ask to see if they can help you. hands on is better than every thing else when picking out poundage.
next is picking out a bow. most folks will shoot a recurve better than a longbow because the grip will fit better.
some things will be a 'trial and error' situation.

my left eye is the best so i shoot a left hand compound but i was told that , with a recurve it didnt matter.and that u could shoot a right hand recurve left handed or vs , is this a true ????? thanks for the help

shoot your dominate(sp?) eye. also shooting a right handed recurve left handed is just like shooting a right handed compound left handed. you might make it work but ....

ok thanks for clearing that up a bit. i am sorry for the dumb question but i really have no clue on recurves except what i read on the web and we all now how that is. thanks for the advice and help

my wife would love ya if u could pull that off eddie ! thanks again for the help i hope to be in the stand next year with a recurve ! so get ready i will be asking plenty of dum questions .over the next year

Aint no bumb questions, only dumb ones are the ones ya dont ask, thats one way we learn & thats why were here, trade'n info & show & tell.

These guys offered some good info already so I'll just give a good place to pick up more info, go to tradgang.com, it all trad all the time, mountains of info on ANYTHING trad, even build'n your own bow, they have what they call a "build a along" but I wont spoil the suprise for ya (but its good stuff).

***** OH YEAH !! see if you can find MASTERES OF THE BARE BOW, its a DVD sreies on trad shoot'n styles, thers a total of 4 in the set but volume 1 is really good, mite help ya get a idea of what mite work for ya. *****

But CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED !!!, Traditional archery is highly addictive, think'n about it is one thing but when ya get that first hit...your hooked...for life, all it takes is that first draw.
