Penn State, Tennessee not saying much about lawsuit involving Bob Shoop

WILLIAMSPORT --" Neither Penn State nor Tennessee is saying much about a breach of contract lawsuit involving defensive coordinator Bob Shoop.

The Nittany Lions, who are suing Shoop for almost $900,000, issued a statement to PennLive on Tuesday about his parallel move from the Big Ten to the SEC.

"Under the terms of his employment contract with Penn State, Coach Shoop is obligated to make a liquidated damages payment to the university resulting from the termination by Coach Shoop of his employment prior to the end of the contract term," PSU wrote. "We are filing suit against him to recover this mutually agreed upon amount."

I wonder if UT will just pay it off and move on?

From what I've read Shoop did not ask Tennessee to buy him out, its all on Shoop. He is probably just dragging it out, there isn't much pity on that school!

It's all starting to make sense.

Was Jones UT's first choice? I doubt a coach from UC was an SEC school's first choice. Heck Vandy took a DC from Stanford a few years after taking an OC from Maryland. Was money an issue?

I ask these questions because this Shoop thing is usually easily handled by the hiring school - get a few wealthy alums/boosters to pony up the cash for the buy out. Why didn't UT pay it or why didn't they get said wealthy alum/booster group to pay it?

This is a standard contract buy out provision. Shoop had to pay up if he left before the contract was up (which he did) unless he got a head coaching gig within one year of leaving (he didn't). And so now after PSU's demand of their former employee to pay up per his employment contract has been apparently refused by said former employee, a law suit has been filed.

Whose going to pay? Shoop or UT? Penn State is going to get paid. Bank on it.

In the meantime, this just looks totally bush league on UT's part.

All of this will be handled under the table with back door deals. Nothing to see here. Happens all the time to all the teams.

LOL, he agreed to pay his own buyout from the beginning.

This is just the process for PS to get their $$$.

What should TN say but, "Thanks Bob" :rotf: !

Shoop took the same position at Tennessee and did so by paying his own buyout, which was pegged at around $800,000, according to FootballScoop. UT athletic director Dave Hart told GoVols247 that Shoop's willingness to pay his own way was a "very, very loud statement" about how badly he wanted to be at Tennessee.

Shoop needs to get gambling advice from Trey.

He has not paid his buy out clause in his PSU contract. Otherwise PSU would not be suing him.

How could this have happened? It was completely avoidable and all schools, including UT, know how. I think it's clear Shoop thought his UT stint would be one year and then he'd move to a head coach position, thus canceling the PSU buy out clause per the terms of his contract. He gambled. He lost.

UT looks bad for two alternative reasons. First, these are standard terms in these kinds of contracts. UT knew. They took the cheap route (UT fans should be ecstatic that the then AD is gone given Martin, Tyndall, and now this). They, or boosters, could have paid the buy out. Instead, to potential head and assistant coaches they just look cheap and a distraction is created. On the other hand, did UT (Jones) only expect him to be around for one year? They gambled and lost. Now it's time to pay or else good luck hiring his replacement.

Sounda like UT is being more sensible. They have wasted a lot of money in the past, this is on Shoops not the boosters!

Come on man, you don't know what you're talking about. Everyone knows UT should have said, "No way are we NOT going to pay the additional $800,000, even though you don't want us to"! :rotf:
