here's the whole story.

I had quite a show on this hunt. My wife and I arrived to the ranch late Friday afternoon (about 3). I wasnt expecting to hunt until Saturday morning. The owner welcomed us then told me to get our stuff in the cabin, grab my gear, that I was going hunting. The temps were in the mid 90s, winds under 10 mph. David showed me 4 spots, I picked the water hole with the windmill. It had several field roads leading to it. We got my blind set up and decoys set. This was my first hunt of the spring since my home lease is/was flooded. I waited about 20 minutes after David left before I yelped with my box call. I didnt hear any response. 20 minutes later, worked the call again, heard a gobble. I thought ok, game on. After 10 minutes, no response, I set down the bow in my lap and picked up the box. GOBBBBLLLLLLEEE!!!!!! RIGHT BEHIND THE BLIND AT 10 STEPS!!!!!!!!! I just had the back window opened enough to see out the back but could pull a shot off if needed. I looked, 2 nice bearded birds, looked to be 6-8 inch beards. Before I could turn around to get a shot off they had moved into the brush. They didnt like the decoys and were skirting around them. They moved into the road the decoys were set but stayed outside of my shooting comfort zone. They stayed out at 20 yards for the next 30 minutes, bellowed up and gobbling at everything I tried. Even gobbled at the squeak of the windmill when the wind changed. I was surprised to see jake fans on these birds considering the length of the beards. About that time, GOOOBBBBLLLLEEEEE!!!!! I jumped out of my skin. 3 more jakes joined up right behind the blind. Smaller beards, 2 looked like puff balls, the third was straight out, about 3 long. These 3 ran the first 2 off and hung up just like they did. Then from the other direction, putt, putt, putt putt. 2 hens and 2 jakes showed up from the other directions and skirted around the decoys. All the birds moved out of sight but still had some gobbling going on. I slipped out of the blind, picked up the decoys and got back inside. Then I did some aggressive calling and the 3 jakes came back to the road. They started the other way and I did a couple of soft purrs which turned them back toward me. The 2 puff balls were first and second. I decided to take the third bird. I picked my spot, drew and released. The arrow stuck up in the grass on the other side of the bird, the bird sprang up and flew over the low group of mesquite trees. The other 2 stood there. I stared in disbelief. I had missed, the shot went under the birds neck. The other jakes walked toward where the other bird went. 5 minutes later there was a bunch of putting and the 2 jakes came by a slight trot. Im sitting there replaying the shot in my head. After about 30 minutes, I get out and pick up the arrow. The broadhead didnt look right, there was red sand all over it. After a few minutes, I took a compass reading over the trees and walked to the other side. My heart sank. The bird could have sailed for a mile down that slope. Still I walked around looking for any sign and found what I was looking for. There was the turkey. The snuffer had cut his throat. This was my first turkey with any bow.
