Ever hear gobbles that sound just like jakes - high pitched and short? There were 2 of those just down below the ridge I'm sitting on, as well as one that sounded much more like a Tom. wlf89 had just killed a jake this morning and he said there were 7 or 8 of them. So I figured there was a Tom and then two jakes farther off.

Well the lone bird came first, but all I could see was his red head (barely 20 yards away) and couldn't see the beard, and he never went into strut. He walked right past and got behin me and just gobbled and gobbled. I was afraid I'd regret not shooting, but I didn't want to end up with a jake.

So these two jakey sounding birds were gobbling down the hill but coming closer. Finally I could hear rustling in the leaves. I did not turn on the camera, because I expected two jakes to come right up and look at me. Right before they crested the hill, I heard psst vrooooom...... Quickly got my gun up. Two bright red heads come up to the top and gobble. They are looking hard, and my gun is a little far to the right. I wanted to shoot the strutter, but he was on the left. I barely got my gun over and managed to get the bead on the right bird who was still looking. Boom flop... He went to flopping and the other one tried to flog him, until I ran over to grab the neck. That ain't no jake! It's a 2 year old

I killed my first bird this year on this same ridge. Also missed the last one here. And I got a bag full of some spongy lookin mushrooms....

Been fooled many times. Never judge a tom by it's gobble :D !

There are many who claim they can, but they are just naive!

Hey Cat...any hen problems this morning?
Good job, man.
nah just another car parked behind me and wlf89 and apparently 2 hunters who put dekes in a completely empty field that I haven't seen turkeys in since January.... Didn't hurt us though, wlf89 killed one in another field and he left and I killed this one in the woods in another spot

the pitch and length usually don't make me think jake, its the awkward 2nd follow up inhale gobble that is usually a good sign of immaturity (not sure if i explained it right but I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about)

I know why they gobbled like jakes, the sucker weighs less than 17 pounds! Thick 10.25 inch beard though

Congrats glad you got him. I had one below me this morning had a funny gobble. I know Better but I told my self maybe a jake. I have let myself get fooled before. I past on him and went to another I have been working this bird all day on the fourth move on him we met each other. Oh well do it again in the morning.
