Didnt get to hunt long this am....
My friend had a hard time getting out of the bed, getting dressed, and then had an emergency potty break. I waited as long as I could for him, but then had to abandon him in order to get to my listening spot in the dark (you can't make it there without getting picked off unless it's pitch black). I sent him to a different farm property you can access even if its light after he got going.
Made a long hike in the dark to my listening spot and got comfortable.... nothing till 610...a hen yelped (or a hunter?) 400yds away on my line. One faint gobble even further away.
I headed that way about 100yds, then sat down in a thicket (which wasn't very thick due to lack of foliage on the privet) along a logging road. I made a few very soft tree talk bubble clucks and quiet 4 note short yelps. Nothing answered. A few more purrs and the far away bird gobbled (not at me). I rested back and got ready for a nap, figuring this was going to be a long day...one last look around before I closed my eyes and I see a black blob coming down the logging road to me. Check with binocs thru the brush, and it's a male.... body looks big, big white head, but can't see a beard as hes coming my way.
I turn the red dot on, get the gun up, and cluck twice. Hes now coming fast, still can't tell for sure if hes a Tom or Jake. He goes behind a tree at 25 yards and I raise my gun and get my sight picture. He pops out from behind the tree and I can see the beard. Bang. 23 yards. Time of death 0630.
Nice fat 3yo with 1in spurs and 9 in beard. Almost yellow legs, which I've never seen to this degree. Not sure the color will be correct in the picture.
He had to have been roosted within 100yds and just didnt talk this am. A little disappointing I only got to squawk on the call 3 times today, but not TOO disappointing
