There is a huge gap in coaching, and Jimbo just got a big extension. uf has had no continuity with offensive coaches, and the continuity they had on defense left with Muschamp. um is probably going through a coaching change soon.
The talent gap on the field might be even bigger than the difference in coaching. The Warchant article did a good job of showing the differences. It's just hard to imagine why a top QB would want to play behind uf's miserable OL, ditto for RB's. uf has to get some top recruits this year, and so far that is failing to materialize. If McElwain comes up with another empty class this year, then he will be on the hot seat after next. And, the cycle will continue... Doubtful that um holds on to their class. If it falls apart, then Golden might be gone. um would take an even further step back if they have to hire a new coaching staff. Might be good for the long run, but it would be a hit in the short term.
The talent waiting to go on the field for FSU might be better than who is playing. It's a whose who of recruits like Henry and Nauta for commitments, and those left likely to commit might surpass them in talent. Meanwhile, the talent waiting to go on the field at both uf and um will be a down grade from what they had.
The headwinds at um might be too strong to ever get back to being in the national title picture. Reality is that they have never even won the ACC. FSU gets to showcase its talent in the biggest hotbed of talent every other year. No other in state school can say that, besides miami and other than when they play FSU it's in front of 20,000 fans (maybe). As a side note, uf was stupid to end this rivalry.
uf has the resources to get into the playoff discussion. But, they seem to be their own worst enemy. They may have made another bad choice with McElwain as coach. They might need to start over with a new AD to right the ship. Even if McElwain is the right choice it's tough with no QB, and not even enough OL to have a spring football game. The best uf can realistically hope for is to win their weak division 2-3 years from now. That's hard to imagine though with what would probably be a freshman QB and a bunch of new OL.
Jimbo is 9-1 against uf/um. In the next 3 years I suspect he will go at least 4-2 against them, with a realistic possibility of 6-0. :tu:
