To get that perfect "surprise" release with back tension you often have to adjust the tension on a release. Below is a pool of blood from my busted nose when I set a release too hot. I simply cleaned up my nose, made the release slightly "colder" and now it is perfect.

Thus why ya never draw towards your face :-) Have seen it happen with all release types. A buddy of mine busted out his tooth when a d loop broke. I always draw out to the side. I've had them let go and pop me in the ear that woulda hurt had it been a nose or chin contact.

I have not busted my nose yet but I have sent a few across the field into my neighbor yard and talked my girlfriend into trying it once she stuck a arrow into the side of my neighbors vinyl siding

JMO...I'd find another place to shoot

Reminds me of a story about twenty years ago. We were bow fanatics. Constantly going to 3d tourneys everywhere. My buddy just traded for a mcpherson when they came out with that split grip. The first time he drew it back his string vetween his wrist strap and release broke about midways through the draw. His right hand clocked him in the nose and the bow string took the hide off his left arm. next thing i new he whirlybirded that new bow about 50 yards. It was quite a scene. After that we replaced the strings on our releases with 1/4 bolts. It was a kind of ingenius improvement. Probably a million dollar idea. LOL

Watch the top archers draw a bow and tell me what would happen if their release went off prematurely. It's my fault for making a normal draw when adjusting a release an taking the hit. I should have drawn low first but oh well I shoot a lot and this can happen.

I agree. I draw the bow away from my face but when a release misfires there really isn't any control over my flying knuckles. I draw away and then anchor to my cheek but I do not draw from the level. It is easier on the shoulders to draw slightly above the target and bring the pin down on the target. When a release goes off it can hit your lip, cheek, nose or miss.

I will not draw toward my face anymore. It only took a couple of pops to my mouth to stop that behavior.

Agree with this.

I am a top archer and I don't draw towards my face ;-) I won this yrs state qualifier in Hunter class. That's top enough for me.

Could you please post a video to demonstrate? The reason I ask is how can you draw a bow in a manner that if there was a d loop fail or release fail your slinging knuckles would not hit your face?

And Crow I respect you but I also do not draw immediately back to my anchor. I come to full draw outside my face to the right (right handed) and come to anchor against my cheek. If soemthing happens it does not guarantee my flying right hand is going to fly back to the right of my face. If it happens as I am further into my draw its going to hit you unless you are lucky. If you are state champ I know you shoot alot. If youve never popped your face when "toying" with a release I applaud you. I know "national" champs that have busted their lip a time or two.

i DRAW slightly off line to my face...........but that is just how i do it without thought of the broken release/d ring thingy......wow. Hope that never happens to me. I have used a compound since around 1977. So far so good.
