Past 3 days hunted the same place all day long. Sat & sun was on gobbling birds on roost but with hens and then woods went quiet all day. The silence lately has been about to kill me. But I roosted one last night that was strutting at 20 yards with no clear shot, he had a couple hens. He gobbled good on the limb. This morning I burned a vacation day and set up on him. Had one hen pitched down uphill from me and he pitched to her and they skirted me in the brush. Called in 2 jakes, one at 10 yards was the only bird I could have shot today. Had tom #2 fire up round 830 but he wouldn't commit, within an hour or two he found a hen in a field and I watched em go into woods. Cut around on em a couple times, almost bumped em once, but kept tabs on his location all day. Tom #3 fired up around 1 or 2 pm, and I knew he was up on a ridge top field that is private. But I set up on logging road and played the game and he was close enough to hear the rumble when he gobbled but he would NOT come to the 3 strand fence to look for me. Stayed out of sight, gobbling at thunder.

Well storms were coming in so I cut back to the truck and took a break...around 4 pm the rain was let up so I approached the field of Tom #2 from another angle. Sure nuff there he was feeding with 4 or 5 hens. Watched em till they were headed a definite way and used terrain to cut around on em. They got way ahead of me and I never saw them again. Think I heard one fly up.

Sorry for the story about nothing, but sure some of y'all can relate. I got a couple of loaded private spots I can hunt and am considering it, although I still have some more public tracts I've been looking forward to hunting this year. I just hope they talk more and hope I can find a lonely bird that will commit.

I feel your pain. I didn't hear a thing this morning. Walked out to the truck and saw a strutter following hens through the neighbors yard. Now this is a rural place I live in and turkeys in yards usually get shot by someone so you don't see that much. Of course where this bird was is the one yankee around and he won't let anyone hunt.

It'll be like a flip switched when it changes. It can only get better. Took the morning off to get some rest

Hang in there you'll get him.

It's been proven through history that women's a mystery! Popeye

Best piece of advice... realize that every bird has their own individual personality, and that individual personality can change throughout the day. A bird that is unworkable and won't respond to anything, can change into a suicidal maniac and come charging to a call just a few hours later. Sometimes new birds shift onto a property. Those things are what we are all waiting for... stay in the woods and it'll come together.

But if nothing is working, it's also time to mix it up. Change calls, start throwing out gobbler yelps, fighting purrs. Try the opposite- barely call at all. Try some kee-kee's if you think he's henned up. I had two birds on different farms this past trip. One would only respond to an aluminum friction call and ignored my mouth call. The other bird on a different farm would only respond to a mouth call and not an aluminum pot. Go figure... most aren't that picky... but SOME are :)

OR like a switch flipped :D !

I can't complain a bit about the birds I've been hunting. Have had great hunts each morning for about the last week.

I also took off this morning. Felt great.

Been the quietest year I remember. I usually gen slip off from work for midday hunts and usually have good success but if u aren't there the first hour of the day ur not gonna hear one gobble where I'm at.

Cat, your persistence will payoff. It always does. Just don't burn out. They are big game for a reason. Things can change quickly and when they do you'll be there.

The fact that you can do it all day is amazing! I have hunted more in the afternoons/evenings this year than before.....it can drive you insane when you are certain that they are there.......but they don't gobble!!

for some reason when turkey hunting gets tough I get more determined and will wear myself out...but that's turkey hunting. I still take a lunch break to regroup and then head back out after em again.
