Got to my place this morning and gobblers already in field,I was a pretty long way off but I believe they saw me back in the woods before I saw them. They looked my way for a minute and they went back to pecking. Then,I got a tickling in my throat and I started to gag,I covered my mouth but they heard me anyway so I packed up and left, got one more hunt left this season before I call it a year.I'm sure most people have had things just go wrong like me,if you havent you will sooner or later!

Funny you mention the coughing thing. I've been dealing with a serious sinus infection since last Tuesday that has also been compounded with alergies. Last Thursday while bird #4 was coming in with his buddy by his side I started getting that same tickling feeling in my throat. Luckily my birds were gobbling about ever minute or so. I would try to make my cough happen when I could hear the gobble. Sometimes they would take a little longer to gobble and my eyes would start watering. Lol once I shot him I bet I couched a good 2 or 3 min till I got it out of my system. Lol

Had not one but two dud rounds that cost me two birds, had another hunter try to hijack a bird I was working only to run him off. Had two big dogs flush another bird that was coming in. Had a huge gobbler all over me one day, must have gobbled 100 times, only problem is, is we were in a laurel thicket, I never got a shot off, he walked over the ridge the end. That's how my season went. My wife says I stepped in vodoo dodoo somewhere. I believe she's right. But at least I got my buddie on a good longbeard so not a total loss. Talk about humble pie, time to go fish! :bash:

I've had several birds ruined by spooked deer this season, just this afternoon actually. Good year here though with 15 called to the gun and 5 for myself. Still gotta kill one more before Sunday lol

I don't know why all of a sudden but I've had issues during turkey season with ASTHMA ATTACKS. Worked myself into good shape these two months averaging about 3-4 miles a hunt. 5 times I've ran to circle and get into position and their headed towards me and I cough like I'm choking and never hear em again. Got an inhaler, cough drops, and no help. Never bothers me while I'm walking just when I stop but cost me 5 chances.

no, heavyshot magnum blend 3 in. The wad was folding and causing a very irratic pattern. Used that load last year with excellent results. The ammo purchased this year is trash.

That is some terrible luck for sure.I bought a cough silencer tube several years ago and it really helps a lot on a cough but not for a gaging or heaving sound

I sat in a ground blind with decoys in front of me for the morning. Stood up to walk out and see Toms strutting 300 yards down the field. I slip into the woods and walk towards where I saw them strutting. Looked to be about four Toms and quite a few hens. I slip out of the woods and get down on all fours to crawl about 60 yards up a slight rise where the turkeys "should" be. I stick my head up to look around and all four Toms are right in front of me at about 12-15 yards. I can see their fans right in front of me. I catch my breath for a second, slip my gun off of safety, get up on my knees, aim at the largest and closest Tom, pull the trigger and hear, click. Needless to say, those turkeys ran pretty quickly as I started my cursing. Had a ball doing it though. Makes me want a Semi-Automatic instead of a pump. And some new shells.

What kind of shells were you using? Also, are you sure you had the bolt fully closed?

Bolt was definitely closed. I use a Nova and if it is not closed it rattles really loudly. It has been a long time since I have had a shell do that.

That is disappointing, as I shoot the #5 LBs.

I'm curious as to what type of gun?

Benelli Nova 12 ga pump. There was an impression on the primer for the shell so I know the firing pin worked. I have shot several out of that box in patterning my gun and had no problems. Also shot some from another gun (Mossberg) and they worked well. I use the 3.5" shells. Not sure what happened other than it did not fire. Great experience though.
