Out of the last 3 times I've called in birds the last few weeks I've let one sneak in on me and bust me before I knew it 2 out of 3 times.
I mean I could here them but haven't pinpointed them prior to looking at them.
I overslept today by an hour. I was afraid I would after a long night with my wife and boy dealing with stomach virus.
I made it up top about 6:00
Couldn't get a gobble had covered some ground and a crow sounded off and a bird answered.
He was a long way off and on a different property in a bottom.
Well I called to him and he answered. I got aggressive with my calling just hoping he'd break my way. I've never called one out of there and believe me I've tried it several times. Well he started my way and another bird fired up off to my right in the same bottom. After a few minutes of hard gobbling I could tell they were committed. I set up at the tree I killed number 4 last year. From what I could tell a Jake was with them because it was having a hard time completing a gobble. These 3 birds were not together but coming up the hill at the same time. I had my gun pointed where the log road was at the he would be on. He was gobbling I knew he was close. Well I hear drumming to my right so I figured it was going to be on my first so I'm about to panic on which way to aim when I look back at the log road and there is a red head looking at me. I never saw the beard so I didn't shoot for fear of killing a Jake and it turned back and started to putt. I cut immediately and it gobbled along with the one right beside me. He continued to putt so I grabbed my Sugartown Sweetness that I had called them with and started the fighting purr to hide his putting. I stopped and cutt hard and to my surprise they both hammered and another Tom had came in from the other holler behind me. So I've got 2 that are just out of sight because of the roll of the ridge
gobbling and drumming like crazy and a 3rd has pegged me. My chest is about to explode. The last one was blocked from my view by bushes he was jarring the ground but couldn't see the hen. He started that show yourself putt then he'd gobble then he'd putt and then walked away gobbling. That ended the gobbling as they all hushed. I had a blast but at the same time was bummed because the last 2 times I've got on birds I've screwed it up and cost myself two turkeys.
After making a move to a different spot is when the Bobcat deal took place. It was a action packed morning. I got back on one of them about 1:00 and he was hot but wouldn't come back up top. I left him hoping he would come up and roost on top I'm going to do my best to go before church I can't stand to wait until Saturday again.
Don't mean to sound like a whiner just venting I guess to someone who can relate. These walls in my house could care less lol.
