This ain't easy!

No, I didn't see anything. I think I was set up in the wrong place. I was 30 yards inside a tree line in front of a bottom field. Behind me was a slight uphill grade of open hardwoods. I didn't see any sign going in. The landowner had seen deer in that bottom field a few weeks back, so I set up near some worn paths that deer had been using. I think any deer behind me would have avoided my area since the Thermacell and my scent was probably catching a thermal going uphill. Plenty of mast was on the ground. I have another spot I am going to set up this coming weekend that is farther away from the landowners house and doesn't get much early season pressure. I did get a good feel of what it is like using the climber, sitting for a few hours, etc. I was worn out. I am going back next weekend.

Try to locate a bottleneck in the terrain or cover on a travel route that will force the deer to move within bow range , then setup your climber in a tree with a favorable wind for that location.

Thanks for the tip. I was just looking at satellite images of the property I hunt and found the perfect bottleneck.

if it was easy everyone would be doing it. lol. stay with it. one thing is for certain it does get easier, and bowhunting will make you a better hunter.

bottlenecks are good and dont overlook other funnels. fence row funnels are good producers, especially a little later. inside corner of field lots/woods. deer skirt these to get around them. a woods bottleneck connecting two larger hard wood areas are good too, especially if there is a field on both sides.

good luck.

I'm always looking at aerial photos and topo maps to pick out good funnels and potential stand sites. If you want , post a topo of your hunting spot without giving away the location and we can help you select potential stand locations.
Most of my best bowhunting stands were selected from studying topo maps in advance.

I look at www.weather.com for aerial satellite images. I wish I knew how to post a pic of the property I hunt.

I'm settled in now, but this a lot different than sitting under a cedar with a 30 30. This is peaceful right now.

I know how you feel. I was also a rifle hunting veteran, before I ever picked up a bow.
I got very lucky, and made a Doe kill on my first hunt, with my forst arrow.
I was in my stand for 5 min. Then 4 came walking in.

Don't worry.
It will happen, and you will feel like the king of the world.
1st bow kill= great feeling!

Let us know when it happens.

I remember my first bowhunt on Oct. 1st. 1980 . I was sitting in a brushpile on a long brushrow that was left when the landowner had cleared out a thicket .
The end brushpile was near a bedding thicket on one side ,and a cornfield on the other . It created the perfect funnel for deer that were headed from the corn to the bedding thicket that morning . I saw 14 deer ,all does. I had held out for a buck because I only had one tag back then in Mi.
It was a great hunt . I was hooked on bowhunting from then on .

find you a chestnut tree or a persimmon tree and hang on it like glue..LOL. I know I know, they are hard to find, but if you have one of these on your property..hit it hard right now, cause they are in season and Deer LOVE
