Oak Ridge here I come again...

HAve you had success at Oak Ridge? I deer hunt there every year. What zones do they open?
I killed my first and only gobbler on opening day there in '06. Turkeys are everywhere up there. Most of the shotgun area is open for turkeys. Nothing inside the fence though.

Is the scouting done the same as for the deer hunts? One weekend prior or do you walk in blind?

You are allowed to scout the Saturday prior to the first hunt.

I just applied for oak ridge. maybe ill get lucky
The first time I was drawn, it took 2 priority points. I have 2 as of now. spitndrum got drawn last year with one, I think. I could be mistaken.

Yeah this is my first time actually applyin for a quota hunt. Still not exactly sure how it works. If I heard right, since this is my first time applying for one it means I only have 1 point, correct?

You start out with zero priority. If you get drawn for OR or any other hunt, you will not gain a point. If you are unsuccessful, you will get a point (max 5, I think). We only put in for OR. Best of luck to ya.

Strut, is the Turkey priority points different from the deer? The reason I ask is, cause there isn't a cap on the priority points on deer hunts

Hunting guide page 24 explains the drawings and priority for each. There are currently 3 drawings, spring turkey, special season deer and turkey, and wma. They are each separate from each other. Spring turkey priority goes up to a max of 5 points. If I recall correctly, there are 33 applicants with 5 points going into the spring drawing. Don't know how they got 5 points without being drawn. There are over 11,000 with 1 point. I'd be one of those.

bsl, it is a tough hunt. I literally 'lucked' up on my bird. A friend of mine who was in my party kinda took the spot I had picked out. I went to my backup spot. I got my decoys and 1/2 ground blind set up and lightly purred right at sunup. He hammered back at me. Then, another bird gobbled. They headed right for me. Every time I called, they both gobbled. After a minute, I heard a gobble from behind me and figured they went down below me. I quietly turned over and was laying prone facing the direction I heard it the last time. I looked over to my right and there a bird stood at 40 yards in full strut. How he didn't see me when I turned over is beyond me. When he turned around, I sat back up and BOOM! Down he went.

I'd rather be lucky than good any day.

I applied last night, thanks for the reminder. I didnt get drawn for oak ridge last year so maybe this year.
