Really great hunt this morning..... Got started into the public land at 3AM this morning so I could be deep back in there by daylight. This is a low turkey population area , lots of bears and hogs, but there are some there if you can get far enough back away from hunters. This one gobbled to an owl hoot from about 400 yards away but was across a creek with double bluff lines so I had to work my way around all of that to get to the point he was on. He gobbled well on the approach but of course shut up once I got within 100 yards. However, within 5 minutes, I could hear drumming and he just slowly eased up the point to me strutting all the way. At 35 yards I tried to get his head up but he just kept marching on. I tried again at 30 and 25 but he still just kept coming strutting. When I tried at 20, he stuck his head out to gobble and I shot him mid gobble. I used a Halloran Walnut Wenge Slate and Gooserbat Hillbilly. 16 pounds 5 ounces, 11.25 beard, with 1.25 spurs.
