...that is the question.

About 6 years ago I had an encounter with a borderline Pope n Young 8 point. I had peed down the side of a tree that was right next to me. I was there for an all day sit, but didn't have my pee bottle. Up until then I always bottled it. It was real still and quiet. So I peed down the side instead of 25' down into the dry leaves.

About 5 minutes later, here he comes from dead down wind and directly behind me. Same way I walked in. 3.5 year old with a swollen neck and stained tarsals. Came in at a brisk walk, put his nose to the tree and walked out and away to my right. It happened fast; once I was able to get turned around and drew on him, I couldn't get him stopped for a shot. And he was gone. No doubt he came into the fresh urine smell. That experience was an eye opener.

I feel like pre-rut or early season it would've never happened that way.

Since then, I've had similar experiences during the late pre-rut, or peak rut. Obviously, this is when bucks are on their feet and making bad decisions. Lol

Any of you guys had similar experiences? I've had luck peeing in scrapes too around this time. Mid-november where I hunt

I used to carry a "pee bottle" as well (usually a plastic 20 oz Mountain Dew bottle). Then I heard other researchers talking about the amazing results they were having peeing in scrapes. I didn't believe them until a tried it. Been peeing in scrapes and letting it fly out of the stand ever since (probably late 90s). But when it comes to peeing out of the stand, I intentionally create as much noisy with the pee as possible. And I've called numerous deer right to me. In the early season, I think it sounds like acorns falling. But closer to the rut, you can make it sounds like deer running (a chase) which can bring bucks running to see what is going on.

I killed my biggest buck ever (at the time) a few years ago. I was walking a secondary ridge into a spot I had picked out on the topo. I was only 600 or 700 yards from the truck and I was seeing all this hot sign. So I kicked some leaves away and peed in the mud hole and poured a little bit of Special Golden Estrous (I'm a fan) into it and stomped around in it. Thinking I would give the bottom of my boots a little mud bath. I worked down the ridge another couple hundred yards and was covered in fresh hot sign. I decided to hunt right there, no sense walking another mile in to a spot I'd never been to before. I slipped off the top of the ridge about a third of the way down, and picked out a tree. I had just got to the top when I caught movement about two hundred yards away. Here comes a beautiful three year old paralleling the ridge top, nose in the air. Coming right to me. I shot him at 15 yards and he never knew I was there.

My personal experience is limited to 3.5 year old deer and under on this. So I'm particularly interested to hear stories about older age class deer

I've been using my pee in scrapes since the late 90s. The hottest traditional scrapes on my property I started with my own pee. They are still going over 20 years later. And I get fully mature bucks at these scrapes every year.

Although I have to admit, my pee isn't generating the interest now that it used to. I'm sure my testosterone levels aren't what they used to be!

Not only is my testosterone a heck of a lot lower than when I was in my 30s, but I remember being able to fill a 20 oz bottle to the top. Now I could carry a thimble and not have to worry about it overflowing!

Tough to know if you're being serious about the Test. I'm assuming you are. You think they can pick up on that? I guess that explains my success with it. 😎

I always have at least 1 mature buck each year, most of the time multiple mature deer come to scrapes that I either started with peeing in them or freshened up by peeing in them. Like BSK said, in early to mid Oct when I go looking for scrapes I know where the community scrapes always are and if not started yet I start them by peeing in them.

Back when I first started hunting had someone tell me never pee from the stand, it wild scare deer away, carry a bottle if you have to, and I did for several years. Had one time early on in my hunting I had my fly down and here comes an 8 point nose in the air. I learned.

All season long, let it fly. And yes to peeing in scrapes, even using my own pee to make mock scrapes.
