I had made a small blind of pine boughs at the edge of a large rolling field. It was about a 500 yard walk across the field wet with dew....poor kid was soaked by the time we got there just before first light.
Unfortunately, no gobbles from the roost. I think he would have been thrilled with that. A hen flew down within shooting range and quickly was out of sight due to the land contour, so he never saw her. A half hour later she poked her head up at about 30 yards in response to small calling, but he still couldn't see her.
He made it a half hour and sat pretty still and quiet the whole time. He's not yet 5 1/2 so I know it wasn't easy to sit still that long. At that point I asked if he was ready to go home and he said yes.
Rather than walk back across the field I took him through the woods and he really like that. As we were walking after the long sit he looked up to me and said "I didn't know turkey hunting can be this exciting" ....lol
Hopefully next time he will get to hear some gobbling or maybe even see a bird.
