got #1!!!
Started out like a typical morning this year,.. nothing gobbling! I sat for awhile at corner of small field looking up hill toward roosting spots. Nothing happening, no gobbles nowhere on that hill, nor any hill around within hearing distance. So, I moved toward top and started circling the hill. Made my way to fence, then all the way down into the bottoms, then back around to were I started.Nothing! This was about 9 o'clock by then. So I sat back down at bottom of field. Got me some crackers out for a snack and one gobbled in lower field on neighbors property. Then another, then another. I figured ok, good. Maybe they lonely enough to play the game today. Considering I was gonna have to call one of them thru a fence, then across a gravel road and then another fence, I decided to try the slipping away technique since they were responsive. So I angled the hill, lightly calling as I went. Of course, I get half way of were I wanted to be, and someone starts target shooting down the holler. I figured this is just how my year has been, why should today be any differ.
SO, I get to were I wanted to be and sit and wait on the gunfire to seize. They even gobbled a few times during the 30 minutes of gun blasting. I figured if they are that lonely maybe I might have a shot still. Gunfire ends, and I wait about 10 minutes. After a sequence of 3 series of calls over the next 25 minutes I had him at 35 yards. He got in some cedars and made it interesting for a second when he started uphill, but I found my opening and he stepped in it.Great hunt all around!AND I needed it after the year I have had!!
