Hunted real hard all weekend, new public land I've never set foot on before. Should have kilt a tom first thing yesterday morning, but I whiffed. Called in total of 3 toms yesterday, couldn't seal the deal. heard good gobbling both days.

This morning the birds gobbled but wouldn't commit. Watched 2 toms and hens in a field I couldn't hunt. Set up on a couple other birds that also wouldn't commit.

Came back to that field this evening. The 2 toms and hens were out there, they started feeding my way. Split up and hens came my way, toms headed toward woods farther down the fence line. I dropped down the ridge a bit, and snuck closer to where the toms were headed. Stopped to listen just in time, 2 red heads were entering woods and coming down hill.

Had to wait for a clear shot, finally could see one standing there. Then suddenly his buddy flew up to roost. I aimed carefully and dropped the second one before he could fly up.

I ran up to him, he was a jake. ???? Never seen him and had been watching these birds in the field. I had clearly watched 2 big longbeards head toward woods, I went to cut them off, here come 2 big red heads into the woods and the one I shot is a jake.

Not complaining, I guess I will take it. Thought I was for sure gonna strike out. Been a long weekend of climbing steep hills and screwing up chances. I think this bird will taste just fine when I make some more Nashville hot turkey.

Thanks. My suspicion is that one of the birds was the subordinate tom going to roost with the jake, and the boss tom was probably still in the field with the hens. Will never know...well it's a dead bird and is gonna be deep fried in peanut oil

Congrats buddy....sounds like your plan worked just wrong bird showed up...I've done it before.
it still got my heart pumping hearing the footsteps and seeing the birds step down off the ridge into the woods. Until that point I was sure I'd walk back empty handed. Then one of them flew up to roost, and I thought crap, it's now or never, as the other bird had his head up looking for a tree. Somehow I got a little pocket to shoot through and he dropped in his tracks.

Way to get it done Catman. I went this morning and it was all quiet. Maybe tomorrow they will open up.
