My middle son (11 yo) is trapping coons and possums on the 70 acres behind our house. He catches one every day in one of his 5 traps. Now's the time to put a hurting on them! Save one nest, that's 6-8 future turkeys! I think nest predators are a big culprit in our declines. Thoughts?

It definitely helps and yes, now is the time. I caught 16 last year. I only wish the season dates extended past 2.29 - makes NO sense to me how we all talk about the increase in predators....and we all talk about the decrease in turkey populations all over the state.....and they close trapping season. Makes ZERO sense to me. Needs to be year-round

Trapping season historically had nothing to do with predator control. It was about furs. There is another segment of sportsmen that pursue them for fur or run dogs on them and they get a vote too.

What's he using for traps and bait?

Tuna on some, peanut butter crackers on others. He has caught some rabbits and squirrels with the PB so he likes tuna better. He just caught another one, lol!

Y'all using box traps?
I use Duke dog proof traps. Bait I use with them is cat food and mini marshmallows

I've got some of those. I haven't used them, especially with cat food, because I'm scared of catching my own cats. :(

I use mini marshmallows with a dab of Cavens Moonshine smeared on the outside of the trap. I never catch anything but coons. I also put a golf ball on top of the trap for a visual attractant and to keep mice etc out.

Box traps. He has 2 dog proof traps but needs dad to set them. He messes with them after school when I'm at work. He's caught a dozen or so. On 70 acres, that has to make a dent

2 coons and 1 possum this past weekend for me. I'm going to give them heck for the rest of this month.

IMO, if you aren't doing your part in removing nest predators, you dont have any reason to complain about not having turkeys.

This is something I need to get into here on the farm. I need to visit the trapping forum & get a primer. I am slightly concerned my clumsy a$$ will trap myself some how...

Trapperman forums.

But literally you dont need to know anything to buy a half dozen DP coon traps, put some dry cat food in them, then check them the next morn and dispatch coons, possums, and skunks that got caught. Dont have to worry about messing with your neighbors dog that got caught.

2.5 weeks left in TN, unless you are removing nuisance animals.
