Ok I read the recent post about a cheaper way to attract deer other than corn.Been having problems with coons. They keep taking the metal lid off my metal feeder bucket even though its hanging from a rope. TROPHY ROCK was the dominant answer. So I went to my local co-op today to buy one. It was only $7 dollars higher than a bag of corn. My question is do you just drop it on the ground like I did at an existing lick? And I went there today to put the rock and as I lowered the bucket SOMETHING WAS MOVING INSIDE IT! As I reached for it a squirrle damn near ran me over. lol. There was a squirrle in my bucket! You had to have been there.

I have a well established lick there. I dont have a stump near by or I would use one. So I guess its as good as it gets.

I've been using TR's for 5 years now. Probably bought around 20 of them and I have always placed them on the ground, but know some say the actual rock lasts longer on a stump. I don't think it matters b/c they will continue to lick the dirt for years after the rock is gone. I like placing them in areas that I know deer use like foodplot edges or areas with high deer traffic. I also like to put out a half bag of corn just to get them coming to it quicker.

Scratch out the leaves in a 2x2 area, pour out half a bag of Trace mineral salt. Co-op has this for about $8 for 50 lbs. Much cheaper than corn or a TR, and works just as well as any other type salt I have ever compared it to!

I actually got some this past weekend to "refreshen" my licks and it was $5.50 for a 50lb bag. Cheap as all get out!

It seems the deer like the salt ,the year after you put it out.
After it has dissolved into the ground...I have found old licks in Chuck Swan you could park a car in.
Just off the Main Forrest Road it was unbelievable.

They are hitting these old licks from last year much more frequently then the new ones.

They will dig a big hole alright!

I agree with ya. I use 50 lb of morton salt, trace mineral, and molasses horse feed. Its great, and costs 25 bucks.

Exactly! Why in the world people pay the ridiculous prices for the TR's is a mystery to me?

:D Well I will admit I love my TR's....I just use the bags as "refreshers". But at $5.50 a bag, thats pretty darn good...I dont care who you are :)

Because it is easier to work with, lasts much longer (does not leach away as quickly), and potentially do not trust what is in "trace mineral" salt formulated for cattle.
