My wife and I have been chasing one particular bird on the state forest and he literally goes a different way every morning, he always ends up at the same place, a field on private property. He is a big old bird and smarter than me, I can see into the field from the public land have tried calling at him, but he doesn't respond to it, we were within 30 yards once but a briar thicket blocked the shot, any suggestions

That's what I've been trying but typically he roost pretty close to the private land

I once had a big old bird that did the same thing. I finally set up inside the timber where visibility was good for a pretty good distance and set up a couple of decoys. Any bird going to the field or exiting could see them. I never made a call as hard as it was not to answer back when he gobbled and instead relied on the dekes to draw him in. He ate good.

Have you tried him later in the day; 10, 11, noon? What's he doing at that time?

He is in and out of that field all day, when he leaves he normally dips into private timber

Hm...tough one right there if you can't get closer to that field. A field turkey can be really difficult. A field turkey on ground you can't hunt is even worse. Only thing I can think of is maybe catch a break right off the limb or before he flies up if you know where he likes to sleep.
