For those that shoot TSS 9s out of a 20 ga (either stock or handloads) what kind of numbers are you seeing in a 10" ring at 40 yards? I finally got a chance to shoot some Federals out of my project 20 today and while it's a huntable pattern, gotta admit it was far less than my expectation. I'm not at all a numbers chaser but my 12 ga has spoiled me all these years I guess.

With all those itty bitty 9s I thought it would be close to if not exceed my 12 with 6s...nowhere near. For the sake of comparison (maybe what I'm getting is perfectly typical) what kind of numbers are you seeing?

I'm shooting the Federal TSS #9's in my 20 gauge Remington 11-87 Compact w/21" barrel thru an Indian Creek .555 and putting 258 in the 10" and 220 in the 20" @ 40 yards. The Apex TSS 9's will put almost 100 more pellets in those circles at 40 yards. What gun and choke are you using?

H&K/Fabarm OU. Rhino 555 put up a perfectly dismal 145...thru the 575 I didn't even count em the pattern was so sorry. Just completely abysmal especially considering $6 a pop...gun didn't like em at all. I got 3 unopened brand new boxes to sell if anyone's needing some PM me.

I MAY try another stock TSS brand (pretty unlikely based on what I saw today) otherwise I prolly just joined the brotherhood of handloaders. Unless I stumble across some miraculous discovery between now and the opener, I'm totin the 12 this spring and will try to work up a load for 2021 I guess.

Handload 1 5/8 oz TSS #9s in Carlson .575 and mine run 235/235 to 250/250, depending on shell/temp/day/etc. Very effective and forgiving pattern for killing turkeys with some room for error if you were to pull off. How big was the sheet of paper you patterned it on?

Y'all gettin 250, 285, 300? basically I'm shooting a Kent Remington Crap hybrid right now. :bash:

Nope Roost. Nailed that down right off the bat and was shooting at a great BIG piece o cardboard. Both barrels shoot to POI/POA (that was the good news actually). Just a super chitty pattern. Yeah the (crappy) pattern will kill a turkey but so will a cheap copper plated lead at that distance. This combo has very little margin for any distance error. With my 12 I can misjudge further than I care to admit and he'd still absolutely crumple in a heap with barely a quiver (ask me how I know).

My son and I both shoot hand loaded TSS #9s. We are both getting around 250 in the 10" and 250 more in the 20". I would consider trying a different choke before giving up. Both my son and my gun are the same. His liked the Primos tightwad and mine the Carlson's 575. I have read where the factory loads need choked a little more over hand loads but not sure.

Lots of money/time/effort to save a pound or two of weight IMO.
Yup. Ain't nowhere near gave up yet but this might be my next altogetherwaylongerthanexpected project gun. :)

Sounds like a choke issue. Try a Carlson's or Indian Creek .555 choke. I bet you'll see a much better pattern with the TSS loads.

What are your numbers looking like?

Very general rule of thumb - 80% of your pattern inside the 20" at 40 yards is "pretty good." 90% is great.

I'm guessing you're shooting a 1.5oz load. So roughly 545 pellet payload. I would expect 200+ in the 10" and somewhere around 250 in the 10"-20".

Here was mine with the Indian Creek 562 and had loads I settled on. Could get higher in the 10 but I like this one for how uniform it was

Finally got a chance to run some Federal 8/10s through a 580...280 something in the 10 ring so I'm right tickled with that. When I walked up to the cardboard thought it might actually be a little too tight but think I can work with that. Thanks all for the help and good luck tomorrow.
