TSS shot

Wanting a TSS load...you and me both! Been waiting 2 years for a commercial ammo manufacturer to start offering some options.

I load a 2.5 oz. Load for 10 ga and ill probably load for 12, 16, and 20 since my buddy gave me a press and die sets for free. :)

I think you can forget that, a 12 ga. 2 oz. Load would run about $8 each just on components not counting insurance and such. By the time they got to the retail store they would be $15 a shell

Could someone explain TSS to me? I understand that its denser than most any other shot, but where do you get it and how long has it been around? I just recently read about it on here, and im usually pretty well versed on my turkey stuff

I "think" Hevi-13 is 20% heavier than lead.
I "think" TSS is 30% heavier than lead.

The advantage of using something heavier than lead is that smaller shot (say #7 1/2) can have the same energy/better penetration than larger shot (say #6). With these heavier than lead offerings (especially the TSS) you get denser patterns with pellets that penetrate deeper.

Some are being offered in a special size #7 shot (smaller than #6 but larger than #7 1/2) which is close to a #5 lead pellet in it's energy/penetration. Many using the TSS are going with #8 and #9 shot, claiming it's more potent than #6 lead, yet gives incrediblly dense patterns.

I "think" the commercially available Federal Heavyweight Turkey Loads are TSS, as they are advertised as being 30% heavier than lead. I bought some last year in 20 gauge. They were providing an incredible 1 1/2 ounce load of #7 shot (incredible for a 20 ga.), and it did produce an impressive pattern.

Biggest advantage I see to TSS is that one can use a more open choke (or less full choke), yet still have the pattern density of a tighter choke throwing lead shot, while having the advantage of a larger pattern (less likely to miss at close or any range).

Regarding readily available factory loads, IMO, anyone with a straight modified choke or full choked barrel might be better off picking up some #7 Federal Heavyweights instead of going to a tighter "turkey" choke and using lead. My 2nd choice would be the Hevi-13 in #7, 3rd choice the Hevi-13 Magnum Blends. However, note that Federal advised against using their "Heavyweights" in ported choke tubes.

If you're using a 20 ga, nothing out there even comes close to providing the performance of those 1 1/2-ounce Federal Heavyweights in #7 shot.

Lead= 10g/cc
Hevi=12 g/cc
Xtended range= 12g/cc
Megaweight= 13g/cc
Fed heavyweight = 15g/cc
Tss= 18g/cc

Tss is some wicked stuff a #9 pellet running 1100 fps will kill further than anyone should be shooting at a Turkey you can't shoot tss out of a regular Turkey choke because it will blow your patterns most of the time a factory full is all you need

From my experience, a 12ga 2.5oz load of TSS is about $10-$11 per shell....

RockHound, I hope to get to meet you on Saturday... ;)

So Rockhound, you rolling some up? Got a good recipe for 1-1/2 oz or 1-5/8 oz of #9s in a 3" shell going about 1100fps?
