I actually responded to another post with this but wanted more to see how easy and inexpensive it can be to call turkeys. If you have rubber gloves and a empty bottle your good to go. :D

IMO, I think a tube call is the easiest reliable call you call have in your pocket, Papaw taught me how to make one from a piece of cane off the creek.
Sinces those days I've made them from just about everything from a pill bottle to a expensive piece of wood trying to make something to hand down to the kids or other young hunters. Now in 45 years of Turkey hunting (Since I was 7) I truly have made every kind and had every kind of call known to a Turkey hunter and have had some high dollar calls mainly just due to its craftsman work and I thought it was purty or the maker was a Grand Champion or something.

When I was a little feller my Papaw thought me the craft of making a Tube call out of a piece of cane from the French Broad and since that day I've made them from everything that is in the shape of a tube and all work to a degree but hollow plastic /PVC/pill bottle or wood for different tones is best. My Dad would have never spent or allowed me to spend money on "Silliness" as he would say on a Turkey call and the man could call in a turkey better than any human I've ever hunted with, in a time when turkey were far and few between in east tn. but we killed a bird every year. And Papaw or Dad that I'm aware of never bought a call. May have swapped around a pocket knife for one or another call on the front lawn of the Sevier Co. Court house on Saturday morning which are very fond memories for me as a little boy. I didnt get off the home place much :D . I was a Victim to a Thieve while on a hunt a couple of years ago and some pill head Jack $%^ broke in my truck and took my vest that had about 40 years of my favorite calls in it. Some home made and some from great custom makers. Once I grew up and became successful I did buy some purty things I never had privilege to as a young farm kid. But I found myself without a call in the middle of nowhere so that training Papaw gave me paid off. I had a empty pill bottle in the truck and rubber glove and thats all I needed. In less that 5 minutes had a great call and called in and killed a bird. I found this link and thought you guys might find it interesting and show you how easy it is to do and that a Tube call is easy and fast to make and sounds great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRVkU7Yb7G4. Happy hunting. You dont have to be rich and buy high dollar calls to be a great Turkey Hunter. IMO Dave.

Great post, Thanks for sharing. I completely agree... I started making tube calls before I had even been turkey hunting yet. I called in my first one with a tube, and since used a tube to kill several others. On Easter Sunday of 2013, I lost the cane tube call I had in my pocket and made a new call with the top of a Vitamin Water bottle, a glove and piece of duct tape - used it to locate and call in a lone strutter right before sunset and killed him at 25 yards.

Past year or two, I use a wingbone more often because the turkeys seem to like it even better, but I always got tube calls lying around. You can make quite a few different sounds on them kind of like a mouth call.

I and my daughter and her boyfriend went to the NWTF event in Nashville last Friday. Talk about a lot of money being spent on turkey calls! I had no idea it was such a big business.

I did end up getting a coyote call though, but I haven't used it yet.

While I agree that tube calls can be effective and do sound good, they are limited in certain situations based on my experience.

To each their own, and based on the amount of $$$ I spend on fuel etc during turkey season $150 for a call that will last me for a lifetime is pocket change.

The guy that taught me to turkey hunt was a special guy. I never seen him use a commercial call. The first turkey (longbeard) i killed was called in by him with some things he put together that morning in the woods. I wasn't much on turkeys then but wish i had paid more attention. R.I.P LJT. He was the best deer hunter i have ever seen as well. Great post.

As a call maker I am not going to disagree with you what so ever... You can kill turkeys with homemade calls all day long I for sure do!! I think a tube call is one of the best calls there are for public land birds, or on windy days... I carry 3 different friction calls every day and 6 different strikers. Two different tube calls, a trumpet, and a wingbone to the woods everyday with me... But being completely honest with you I carry a wide variety of mouth calls with me and that is typically what I call with 90% of the time... Bottom line imo u don't have to spend lots of money on calls to kill turkeys do what you can do and enjoy your time outdoors..

I like mouth calls too. Frees up my hands. And most of the mouth calls are under $10.00 or pack of three for under $20.00. They work great.
