Dad and I decided against middle TN with the iffy weather. So we went to a property where we heard two early yesterday but they didn't want to play.
We heard nothing in their vicinity so we moved further back. Heard no gobbles through the the few wind die downs. We sat up on the side of a hill that drops down into a bottom and cold called.
After about 20 minutes I pulled out my Crystal Mistress to get something a little louder than my mouth call. After the first run of yelps I decided to cut on it. On the 2nd cut, GOBBBBBBBLLLLLLLEEEEE from my 3:00. I was afraid to move. I slowly turned my head to see him strutting 30 yds from my right shoulder. There was a lot of trash between us. How he didn't see me raise my call I have no idea. He was slowly working behind me. As he passed some trees I was able to put the call down and swap the gun to my left hand but that didn't work as I could not hold steady enough.
As he was going behind me I was able to stand up and get turned. But he caught movement and started to putt and walk away. I still had my mouth call in so I called softly to him which slowed him down. I called a little more and he stopped. Another soft cluck or two and he started to strut again. He ever so slowly started to come back down the hill to my right now as I'm standing facing him with my tree between us. He finally cleared enough brush and I was able to take the last shot opportunity that I thought I was going to get.
The 3-inch long beard shells did their job. He's a 2 yr old.
