At the end of last years turkey season I decided to change things up. I had shot 3.5 inch lead for as long as I can remember. I switched over to a Franchi Affinity 3, 20 gauge shooting TSS. I have been very impressed with this switch. I am not saying I would have not been just as successful. The lightness of the 20 combined with the little recoil has been great. I also have been very impressed with the TSS. It hits them like a ton of bricks. I heard people talk about them not even flopping after the shot. I have found that to be true this year. If you have not made the change I would encourage you to look into it.
Good luck and happy hunting!

Several on here have switched to the 20 ga. I bought an 870 compact with a 21" barrel in 2017 after seeing the results from my son's with Heavy Weight #7s. I shot them in 2017 and started reloading TSS in 2018. My 12 ga has not been out of the safe since.

The small profile, lightness, and less recoil of the 20 ga is what I love about it. It patterns just as well as my 12 ga did with 3.5" #6 Longbeards with threw a wicked pattern so I definitely don't feel under gunned. They will also kill a turkey much farther than we should be shooting at one.

One of my friends decided to make the switch this year from 3.5in 12g lead #5's Win XX to TSS after our TN trip. He's killed a pile of birds graveyard dead with that gun, but he flat out rolled a bird at 32 yards, shot him again at about 38 yards limping away. We found the bird piled up in a thicket 45 minutes later still alive.

His second bird he shot at 42 yards (he misjudged the distance), broke both his legs and the bird took flight. Luckily he crash landed against a woven wire fence and he was easy to dispatch and recover after the initial shot.

The next day he watched me absolutely graveyard dead, no flop, instant dispatch a gobbling tom at 40 yards with my little 20g. He commented that seemed like a long shot for a 20g. Not with TSS 9s.

Keep in mind I've seen him kill over 20 birds personally with his same setup in the past, never needed a followup shot before. He did miss one at 7 or 8 yards a couple years ago. But the pattern density of that setup always leaves the possibility of not putting a single pellet in the brain or spinal cord to drop a bird instantly at 30-40 yards.

yes, the 20g with TSS 9s is THAT good. I'm now up to 25 birds between me and my kids since making the switch. Only 2 misses (under 10 yards), 1 miss at 17 yards (I shot clean over him), and 1 loss (changed from reduced recoil to the full velocity without checking POI last year) that flew off without appearing injured.

Yep, I made the switch several seasons ago. The 20 gauge was a great decision. That Mossberg 835 I used before killed on both ends!

It'll likely take me a few years to actually muster the nerve to do it but I'll probably have a 12ga turkey killer to sell. It's my backup now and unless something breaks on the 20, might never lug it thru the woods again.

I'll never go back to a 12 personally. I have no desire to go 410 though.

Other than having my 20 break or get stolen, I seriously can't think of any situation where I will ever cary 12 gauge turkey hunting again.

I've killed a few with a .410. It's fun and I carry it a few times every year. But more of a novelty. It's not going to become my every day gun. IMO, paired with tungsten loads, a 20 gauge is the perfect turkey gun.

matter of fact if I didnt still duck and pheasant hunt with a 12 I would prob just sell my SBE2 and buy another 20 gauge.

I have become partial to the 20 as well. I typically shoot a Benelli SBE. Wanted to get a Benelli M2, but got a deal on a Franchi Affinity 3. I have loved it so far. I find my self down sizing for deer as well. Shot a 270 and a 7 mag for years. Last few years I have been toting a 243.

I missed my first bird at 10 yards Tuesday shooting 12 gauge 3.5 inch Winchester XXs. Perfect set up, but I failed to take into account how tight the pattern would be at that distance.

I would rather shoot one at 30 than anywhere. When I was picking a choke I didn't get too tight. I wanted a good pattern out to 40. I'll never shoot past that. Even though everyone will tell you TSS is a 60 yard load.
