Published April 12, 2011
By Staff Report - Elizabethton Bureau ELIZABETHTON A turkey hunter was accidentally shot by a fellow hunter Sunday, then abandoned by the errant hunter who had promised to get help, police said.
Daryl Lloyd Wilson told Deputy Brad Hamm of the Carter County Sheriffs Department that he was hunting on U.S. Forest Service property off Panhandle Road around 10:15 a.m. when he said he thought he heard a turkey call as he was walking from his hunting position.

Wilson said he stopped to look for the turkey and then heard a shot. Wilson was struck in the right side of his body, ranging from his head to his knees, with a few pellets entering his right leg and arm.

Wilson said he then saw another hunter about 60 yards away. He said the hunter walked over to him and asked if he had hit him. He then offered to help him get out of the woods. The unidentified hunter aid he was going to gather his stuff and would be back. Wilson said he began walking out of the woods toward his car and never saw the hunter again.

Wilson said the hunter was about 6 foot, 1 inch tall and weighed around 180 pounds with a slender build. He said the man appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s and had a medium length gray beard.

After arriving at his car, Wilson drove himself home and his wife drove him to the hospital.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is investigating.

Ive had some trespassing issues from turkey hunters this year totally ignoring signs and boundaries. Makes you wonder what some of these hunters will do.

I would take exception with your use of the word "hunter"...let's call them what they are...STINKING POACHERS!

Sad state of affairs.

What would you do if you were shot like this? Your wounded in the woods face to face with the perp...I'm not saying shoot back but I would have legal actions pending in the back of my head and am not sure what I'd do if I was put in the same position as this gentleman.

Still not sure how on God's green earth you shoot another bipeadal camo clad human walking at 60 yards!

How do you mistaken a hunter for a turkey how did the guy make sure of his target that is crazy I heard it on the radio to

I'd defiantely be over there after I was healed up waitin to see if he showed back in the area. Then he'd be payin for each pellet that hit me

I got shot at by a deer hunter when I was younger. Dont think he meant to hit me, just wanted to scare me and keep me from hunting that area. But the bullet hit pretty close. I tell you what I did, I hit the dirt LOL If someone pulled that crap these days, Id fire right back, you would in fact be fearing for your life. I see it as attempted murder.
