Went on a wounded warrior hunt this weekend and had the privilege to hunt with and be filmed by the legendary Cuz Strickland from Mossy Oak. What a great guy.

The Hunt:

Cuz had located a couple of birds Friday morning and was pretty sure we could get on the birds Saturday. We eased into the woods about 0625 and took a seat at the base of a pine tree. By 0700 we had not heard a bird, Cuz let out an owl hoot and a bird gobbled in front of us about 140 yards. Cuz said we are too close lets back up. We moved into our new position and got settled in. Me on the gun Cuz on the camera and doing the calling. Did I mention he is a great guy. Bird number 1 gobbled about 10 more time and then another bird kicked in behind us. Cuz whisper in my ear "its about to get interesting". Bird number 2 did not gobble much on the limb but gobbled 4-6 times on the ground. Bird number 1 flew down and gobbled in the same spot for another 20 minutes. About this time Cuz said "Clay he is in the road to your right". I could see him and he was moving. I seen glimpses of him in the thick stuff about 5 minutes later but then he was gone. All of a sudden Cuz whispers again "he is on your left and coming in" I said I've got him. The bird stopped at 30 yards and was behind some brush. Cuz said "can you kill him" I said 'no I need 4 steps to the right". Well the bird listened and stepped to the right. Cuz clucked the bird raised his head to look and Cuz said "kill him" and I did. Boom!!! The hunt was filmed and will be on Hunting The Country in January or February 2012.

Here are a few pics. Me and Cuz, USMC General Livingston (R) Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and the group of other warriors with our birds.

That is awesome, glad you connected and got it all on film. I really have A LOT of respect and admiration for all of the selfless people who put on hunts for wounded warriors and other great causes.

Cool. Cuz is a nice guy. Very interested in why he said you were too close. Been huntin em nearly 3 decades now & IMO it is always best to get as close to em on the roost as you can, unless there were obstacles that would hinder the bird from coming to you.

Cuz has always seemed to be the most down to earth and friendliest of the TV hunters. Glad you had success and were able to take part in the event.

To answers your post kdxdude we were in the an open pine flat the bird was on the edge of the pines and a hardwood bottom. We were in the open and eased back about 40 yards.

Thanks to all for the nice comments. It was definitely something I will never forget. I am glad I got to share it with everyone on the form.
