Use to on my farm and neighbors farm it wasnt nothing to hear 30 gobblers every single morning then it got down to 15 then 5 now your lucky if you hear one on 1500 acres. Its like this in southern lawrence and southeast wayne couties. and i have discussed this with several game wardens and biologists all i could ever get was "were working on it" until yesterday i talked to one of lawrence countys main officers and was told after several studies that it was because of the chicken barns. The local barn owners have been spreading there chicken crap on hay fields and it carries some known disease. He told me that the disease stays in the ground for 4 years, He then proceeded to tell me that they are fixing to bust this wide open and put a hault to it. so maybe just maybe in another 10 years we will have a few birds. This seems accurate because we didnt have people spreading it until the last 10 years and Northern lawrence and wayne counties have tons of birds where southern portions dont.

I know the population is cyclic. I have seen it ebb and flow in my area of Decatur county. However, that is the first concrete reason that I've heard that makes sense. Usually, you hear the coyotes are responsible or other predators, which I, and I think most biologists have never bought into. But that appears to be a legitimate cause, and if it is, maybe the downturn can be turned around. Good Luck.
