I had a fun weekend trying to get my dad a bird. I called two gobblers in yesterday but he missed. Two more gobblers skirted us this morning and then the monsoon hit. After he left, I threw on my rain gear and hunted through the nasty weather.

The weather finally broke and I spotted this guy in a field strutting with a hen. After belly crawling into position, I convinced them to head my direction. At 10 yards, my single barrel 20 gauge went to work.

He's my first gobbler with my little 20 gauge pop gun. I like the challenge of getting them in close- although it was tough letting one walk earlier in the day at 40 yards.

He's a good 3 year old with two beards, good spurs and had to weigh at least 23 lbs. The coolest part was digging 50 grubs out of his crop!

That's awesome, nice work. We called those things Betsy bugs growing up, in my drinking days I've sadly eaten a few myself. Not too bad after a 12 pack

Mmm, what else did you find while digging around in there :D ?

Congrats on the bird!

Good job, bro. I can honestly say I've never seen anything even remotely like that in a turkey's crop; that's almost freaky!
To be honest, when I kill one they are usually semi-full of corn and where they're getting that I'm not sure, but I could probably guess who the offender is two ridges over.

Nothing tastes bad after a 12 pack!

I pulled 25-30 acorns out of a gobbler's crop a few years ago. I didn't realize the crop could hold that many!

Grubs, huh? Never found those. Had clover, yellow flowers off rape plants, beechnuts and worms in one I killed last week. That bird you killed must've found a rotten log full of them and gone to town. Prob why he weighed 23 lbs!
