Looks like two more companies are jumping into the black-flash trail-camera market. Primos has a new model for this year called the "TRUTH Cam BLACKOUT," and Bushnell has the new "HD Trophy Cam No Glow." The Primos cam is listed at $199 and the Bushnell $299.

If anyone has a chance to try one of these please let us know what you think (and post pictures if possible).

Oh boy....I hope they are better than last years "new black flash camera"

I have $250 in Bass Pro gift cards and was wanting to get a new Reconyx this weekend and have it about half-off, but I wish I knew more about one of these!!!!!......That way I could save about $300

Although I'm always itching to get my hands on the latest cams, I'm beginning to take the attitude of waiting to buy a "new" cam until it has been on the market for awhile. First, first-generation models often have bugs that need working out. Second, I want to hear lots of user reviews before I plunk down my money.

If it were me JCDEERMAN, I would spend the extra and get a Reconyx. For now...

x 2 (if you're wanting true black flash).

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

But I'd get a homebrew now rather than any commercial cam if you can get by without true black flash.

Oh I know that for a fact. I already have 2 Reconyx's....I always wait until I get alot of gift cards, then go splurge on them. They truly are a great cam....just trying to talk myself out of not spending the extra money  ....but I know I will eventually anyways. I'm going there this weekend and hoping (the very slim chance) that the Roconyx's are part of that Father's Day sale

:D

But all-in-all, this is what we need....More black-flash cameras creating competition in the "black-flash market". We just have to hope that somebody starts making a good and reliable camera for a cheaper price, which in turn will drive the prices down from all companies for their consumers

I totally agree:
Competition is what makes the free-enterprise system sizzle, and FREEDOM with that FREE-enterprise system allows for those who innovate to be rewarded for their ingenuity. Take way the potential for great rewards, and we never get the innovation. Isn't it remarkable all the great inventions that have come from he United States' "free enterprise capitalism", things that have totally changed the world?

Let's just hope the government doesn't someday mandate Obamacams, which might be a piece of junk priced higher than a Reconyx. :)

First, it looks like that $199 Primos cam was an early model. Now they are selling the Primos X-Cam Bkackout, which appears to have more black LEDs. It retails for $299 like the Bushnell. The one review I've seen of the X-Cam says it is truly black-flash. However, I'm not that impressed with the night images. They are VERY grainy.

Now it appears the Bushnell black-flash cams (one with a color viewing screen and the ability to 1070 DPI video versus a cheaper model without viewing screen and only capable of 720 DPI), has to be called more of a "low-glow" instead of a true black-flash. Many users report they can see a faint glow from the Bushnell's LEDs out to 8-10 feet. I have not seen test images from the Bushnell yet.

Guess I should count my blessings, as most of my complaints have been with false advertising and a lack of quality control.

Bottom line remains, we've come a long way on trail cams in the past decade. For about what we paid for a 35mm film cam (24 to 36-pic capacity, 2-3 week battery life, then "develop film"), we can now have a trail cam with months of battery life, thousands of pics, and "instant" gratification when checked.

Today, I can purchase a $200 Nikon camera that outperforms a $1,000 Nikon of a decade ago. Part of why the "homebrews" remain a better value than the commercially made trail cams. Still waiting on the trail cam industry to catch up with the camera industry, in that we SHOULD be getting more for our money sooner instead of later.

Primos Blackout- Trigger 1.84 secs without flash
1.48 with flash
Flash range looks to be 60 feetish with more of a spotlight effect the farther out you go. Night time photo have the typical grainy look of black flash. At least this is what Im reading on the net.

Uses 4 D cells. Looks to have a good wide angle fresnel on it. Wonder if they took the audible clunk out of the exchanger like the other Primos had? Anyway looks pretty good, but who knows about reliability.

True that black-flash night-time images often suffer from graininess, but the images I've seen from the Primos are exceptionally grainy, to the point I don't think they would be of use for my purposes. I don't think you will be able to make out antler configuration beyond 30 feet.

I will post some of the new Bushnell pictures on Sunday. Pulling cards tomorrow. The cost of the 720p without the viewer is $220 at most places.

I read on another forum yesterday that a member had the camera and there was no noticeable audible clunk. That is merely one person's review so I would not hang my hat on it just yet.

Great! Cant wait to see them and getting your opinion.

Why would anybody buy a commercial cam, they can build what they want for half the price, not black flash ....but I will have to see theirs.
I may be a bit partial but my cheapest homebrew would equal the high dollar Comm. Cams.
When I see or hear a guy bragging on a comm. cam I kinda shut one eye and bite my tongue.
