TWRA requesting public input for turkey plan

Ohhhh, man! I've been waiting years to give my thoughts on this subject - other than through emails to commissioners that are easily ignored.

I've got a lot of thoughts about this "strategic plan" to do nothing for a few more years then read a report and reconvene. But as we submit formal comments, lets try to remember that AT LEAST they are putting together a formal plan - inadequate though it my be in its current form - and they are now specifically asking those of us with a vested interest in preserving and hunting turkeys to give our opinion in a formal notice and comment setting where public opinion really can cary weight.

In my opinion, it's a big step in the right direction. And just maybe they are coming around before it's too late.

I filled out the survey, hoping the season starts 2nd weekend in April and limit the kill to two turkeys per season!May never happen though!

Everyone with vested interest, which is most who read this, and many more who are not on TnD need to take the time to submit comments. Keep them professional and to the point and your voice will be heard.

I suggested 2 bird limit, no jakes except for young sportsman hunts and I just threw in habitat improvement because you can't go wrong with that lol.

Oh boy, guess what suggested :D

If I ever make it onto the commission, you'll have my support :tu: But I don't like the chances for now.
The current commission is the problem. They need some blue collar hunters on the commission with first hand information on the turkey population in their area that can make informed unselfish recommendations on how to systematically fix the current problem.

I submitted my comments. Hate there was a character limit, but I used every one they allotted.

Whenever I see an online questionnaire with a character limit, tells me they really don't want to hear what you have to say. Then again, I've never seen a government site that worked worth a flip to start with. I just filled out 3 and sent 3 suggestions .

If I would have turned this horsh** in at work I would be fired. If one of my employees turned this in they would be fired. There are no conclusions or specific actions. Vague for a reason, because they have not plan. The harvest data as a trend is flawed. This is pure crap.

This is a very good observation in my humble opinion.
I feel like this is a problem with game & fish commissions everywhere.not to say there aren't good commissioners on TN or KY's but the few I know or know about, don't necessarily hunt the way a lot of folks do. Some have little to no idea of what public land hunting is actually like. But that is another tangent.

I'll send my responses in even through I am an out of stater.

Same here. I also asked them to research the social structure of the breeding process in terms of how hierarchy is established

I can't believe how many of y'all are for reducing the limit like its going to solve our current population issues...

Remember if we reduce it to 2 the chances of it being upped back to 4 again in the future are slim to none... Some of us like to hunt and can practice good harvest management on our own tracts....

Be careful what you wish for!!!!!!

How often do you limit out?

Would be most years if I could hit them.. :bash:

I have never killed more than 2 off any one farm also try to get a public bird every year..

If the limit was 2 I would of been done the first weekend last season and dang that would suck!

You have Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi all pretty close and would even get you in the woods sooner. My thinking is 2 is a good year for me lol. If I wanted to keep hunting I would hunt public in our neighboring states. Granted not everyone can afford or have the time to do this, but it's a option.
