I went to a coworkers place today to walk around and look for mushrooms (didn't find any but shot some stuff instead). Anyway he lives in a holler and we get half way up the hillside and here she is. She flew off across the holler and then we bumped her again on the way back to the house. Hope she is safely back on the nest.

I've seen them nest in places like that too. Just doesn't seem like a prime location destined for success but she knows way better than I do. 28 days...dang. Just doesn't seem likely (or fair). But then again who said Ma Mature was fair?

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah it's in wide open hardwoods with plenty of coons and possums, there were 13 eggs, hope they make it.

only hen I spooked off nest was wide open in hardwoods.

Biologist at a turkey hunting seminar said 1 bump off nest and 60% will not return. 2 bumps and 100% no return to nest.

first mistake was listening to a biologist! lol :D if that was the case they would have never been any poults

Never seen one in that wide open of an area. They've been in thick tree lines, briar patches, grown up fields, and areas similar.

Me neither. Our hay fields are not high enough to hide a turkey right now. Maybe the lack of growth is why she picked the timber.

I have never seen it in the wide open either. Maybe the vegetation being about 2 weeks behind normal has something to do with it.

Also, Maury County has so many turkeys she may have ran out of room haha.

this wasn't vegetation not growing yet, it was just open hardwoods. Davidson Williamson county line

I was meaning that the vegatation is 2 weeks or so behind normal, meaning hens might nest in odd places because usual overgrown fields are not as over grown as normal. Regardless though, I find it very odd for a hen to have a nest in the middle of open hardwoods.

And the Maury County comment was a joke. But still, turkeys in Davidson and Williamson everywhere too.

Nothing unusual that I see, looking good 12 eggs and she's begun sitting hopefully the rest will follow her lead

Agree. Is it any wonder coons are their #1 predator?

Nice pics, Catman - thanks for sharing.

I am shocked a biologist would say that, that's just foolish. I can promise you a hen gets bumped many times in 28 days. Coyotes, coons, opossums, bobcats, deer, humans, the list goes on. ESPECIALLY a hen nested in the wide open.
